Is it Worth the Money Protecting Your Digital Products?

Hey peeps..

One of my friends was giving crap about not using any type of protection on my last wso as where he was with his and my question to you guys is..

Is it worth it spending money to have my product protected?

I just figured if someone really wants to steal they will find a way to.. These scum internet pirates are going to do it whether i try to stop them or not..

What do you guys recommend, should i spend a few bucks and what type of protection do you recommend if that's the case?

    Don't bother. Like you said, Internet pirates always find a way to pirate something, and most DRM can easily be broken with 1-click software.

    Better to try to monetize piracy by including links to your other products within your report. Some people who pirate information products end up becoming loyal customers, if they really like your content.

        Except that it isn't true. Pirates don't become customers. They're only interested in the product if they can get it for free and it's the challenge of cracking it that they enjoy.

        I bought a great automated DMCA software program and the file sharing sites they use respond to DMCAs. Having it automated makes it a breeze to send them and keep the links down. Eventually they get bored and move on to another product.

      Ha, I was thinking the same thing earlier today, but that really only works with certain types of products.

      Gengis isn't talking about DRM, he's talking about restricting access to the download directory.

      I'd like to get some more experienced WSO'ers feedback on this also.

      Gengis, the software I was telling you about is called WP File Lock, and it costs $47. There are other options out there as well, I only chose that one because it was recommended by an experienced WSO seller.

      So far my experience with the File Lock software has been tip top. It integrates perfectly with OptimizePress and Warrior Pro.

        JVZoo and DigiResults offer protection for your file's download pages. They're like WSO Pro (which also offers protection for your files).

        Personally, I can see no reason why you would want to shell out $47 for something that you can just as easily get for free, but if that's what works for you and you like it, great.

          Well I'd obviously rather take the free protection, but it isn't always an option. For instance, my latest release is a Five Video Tutorial Series in 720p, so it's 138Mb. WarriorPro only allows up to 100Mb, and only one file. Also, you can't use WarriorPro as a delivery source on your website unless you have a listing in the WSO section here. There might be some products you want to protect, but don't want to release as a WSO.

    I would personally roll with DLGuard. Yeah some people are solid with their attempts to reach a download page without purchasing, but it's still something worth doing so that people wont spam your download page all over the place online.

    They will stamp your PDF on every page with the name, email addy and transaction number. Not 100% efficient, but will help somehow. It's $5 a month and takes all payment processors.

    Every time you come up with a better way to protect your work, it's like offering a challenge up to hackers to have a go at it. They will get in, as you only need one person who was privy to how it works to leak information, and it's worthless.

    Bottom line is that you will lose a certain percentage to theft and pirates. Don't even get me started about China, they ignore all copyright laws. If you are doing video then the best option is a membership site, people can still pass out membership usernames and passwords but good membership software will track IP addresses and block username/password sharing. I think that s2member mentioned does this. Also run your videos from a video hosting service using video streaming. Don't allow downloads or link embedding. I use sproutvideo.com

    While you'll always lose a percentage of your sales to piracy and free sharing, it's worth investing some time/money to protect your products, or at least making things a bit difficult to pirates to do their thing: some of them will give up if they see that it's a hassle to hack your product.

    At the end of the day, it's your online asset and you gotta protect it.

    I've sold a lot of software over the years and things like unlock keys are always getting distributed around the web. I know guys that obsess about protecting their products - but really your time is much better spent on moving forward than obsessing about a practice that is more or less unstoppable. ( just ask the music companies )

    That doesn't mean you want to make it easy for them - a simple method of hiding links is to put the files / thankyou page on a different domain or at the very least a different directory than the root / parent site.
