Do you block search engines from indexing your sales letter sites?

Do you guys block search engines from indexing your sales letter sites?

I have seen quite a few popular sites with a single sales letter page that do, thus the only way of accessing their sites is by clicking on an ad. I'm curious as to whether if any of you do it and, if so, why. I was thinking a reason could be so that competitors find your page and copy your copy (i.e. text).

For what is worth, it only took Google to index my site in 2 days after creating a sample page despite I hadn't linked to it or pinged my blog. Interesting, I remember it used to take weeks before, perhaps the new Wordpress (3.5) speeds up the process?

So, do you block search engines and if so, why?

    It depends. I know a few people that do, because they rely on affiliates to market their site. They do it so well that they don't need their domain ranked, just their affiliates' sites.

    I don't block them... typically I am driving traffic to those sites either via email, or paid traffic. Although I have some sales page only sites that really have nothing on them. Yet they are still often PR 1 & 2 etc...

    But frankly, I don't care if they deindex them. Won't have any effect on me for those particular sites.

    I've also ranked standard sales pages again, as long as they have other content on them. One of the big mistakes a lot of people are making right now is that they use images for their whole sales page. So Google can't read any text from those sites.

    Where I typically have the Terms of Service, Disclaimer, Privacy Policy, Contact/Support links on the page, and my sales page's text, is really text. Except for some images here and there. But those will typically at least have alt tags with the correct text in them.

    So sometimes they rank for me, and I'm not even trying.

    Last sales page I got lazy on though... Have to go in and flesh it out.

    Interesting.

    I thought Google hated sales-letter-only sites and would not rank them, even for long-tail keywords. Perhaps yahoo/bing are still ranking them though? I've seen a lot of garbage there, especially if the garbage is EMD.

    Hi All,

    Just add this code to the page in the html

    <meta name="robots" content="noarchive">

    If the site is already indexed then you have to go to Google Webmaster Tools and then have the site "unindexed" - you have to request it and then after Google does and you can't find the site page anymore in searches, then you can add that code to the html of the page (just make sure that there is no code in the <head> tag to archive it!) and then upload the page again with the new no archive code.

    Works fine, I use it on all my client's download pages when I create sales letter websites for them.
