How to get more list members - Key Tip

This is quite basic but it seems like few people are using it. I have started using it on my lists and the results look encouraging.

The bottom line is that you have to realize that your list's value lies in the value your list members see in the emails you send out. That's the bottom line. You have to put in a lot of effort to make sure the emails are powerful, attention-grabbing, and gets the reader to open his or her mind regarding the value of the upsell you're promoting.

The good news is that if you do the following right, you will also NUDGE the reader to forward your email to his or her friends. Think about it-your list member is already reading your email and it only takes a click of a button to forward to your email to his or her address book. Don't waste this opportunity.

So what's the secret to getting more list members with your emails? Simple. ASK THEM. Always include TWO lines in your emails asking the recipient to forward the email to their friends and family who might be interested in the message you sent. The more powerful your message, the higher the chance your email will be forwarded.

This puts the ONUS on you to do the following:

IMPINGE - Interrupt your reader's thought patterns and get in their minds. Your text must touch a nerve and have a sense of URGENCY to it.

INSPIRE - Get your reader to open his or her mind about a particular activity or cause or notion. Don't be blatant or ham-fisted about it but DRAW the reader in regarding the value of the activity or state of being.

TEACH - If you do the two steps above correctly, your reader's mind is open. You only have a few seconds to mention informative stories, vignettes, anything that helps TEACH your reader. Of course, these must be based on facts. Every story buys you more time and builds credibility further.

CALL TO ACTION - This is the payload of your email. Of course, it shouldn't be spammy. Instead it should read like the idea came from the reader. It would be a 'natural' conclusion for the email if you did the 3 steps above correctly. The CTA doesn't have to be sales. It can be forwarding your email or clicking on a blog post link for more information.

Haven't done the forward email thing, but the main point before even doing that is the most important thing - as you pointed out: the value that the reader sees in your messages.

As long as there is persuasion to do that thing that you want your reader to do without pushing them through the door, and inspire the person to keep coming back, you've done your job.

Technically, working on one's copywriting (the one writing the emails and blog posts) would be an intelligent course of action.

Yes, it's all about copywriting but also working on THE OVERALL QUALITY of your emails. A Gift wrapped smelly fish is still a smelly fish at the end of the day, right? Focus on VALUE first. When the reader sees value in your email, you just need to NUDGE them to push your emails on to reader's friends.

Excellent post! Good old fashion email marketing at its best. I personally use my subject line to lead the customer into opening my message and within the message itself I try to always insert my own personality. I enjoyed reading this.

    Kind Regards

I like this idea, it's simple but I've never really thought about it. In your experience, how much more exposure do you get from forwards?

In my footer I tell people they can tell their friends to sign up. But encouraging them to forward the email on would be even better.

I usually couple a request to forward the email with a line something like

"Did a friend, family member or business associate forward this email to you? If you liked what you read, you can get your own subscription at [link]. You'll never miss another email..."

Great text, John. I usually put mine at the top and at the bottom. Shooting for referrals really pushes me to go the extra mile. Instead of just writing to be read, I now write to be forwarded
