Health, wealth, and relationships. I'm sure you've heard it before, but those are the 3 things that are on everyone's mind. Look for quality products that solve problems in sub-niches of these big 3 and you should be fine.

Research will go a long way.

If you are targeting amazon, with a kindle e-book for example, then by all means rely on their ratings tool. It's a good way to cut your tooth for little cost.

But for the broader market ( that might be a silly statement considering how broad amazon is! ) people are generally willing to spend, where a problem that is difficult to solve, or embarrassing, exists.

Personally, I won't touch adult, infertility, or problems where a life is at stake ( cancer diets for example), but anything else is fair game.

Bottom line is: if you see a lot of products that are being created on such a niche, then there is a lot of money to be made in that niche.

Niches with high gravity products on clickbank is a great start. From that you can figure that weight loss, dating and products dealing with learning how to play a music instrument are obvious examples of very profitable niches. Knitting is not.

Research the Keywords you come up with but the other suggestions are good also but the most important thing is research what interests you. Then research the Keywords first.

Trying to identify "a niche in which people are already spending tons of money" sounds to me like a recipe for finding the most competitive and difficult niches in which most of your potential customers will perhaps already be on many other marketers' lists, and will already know many of the leading products, too? Those are niches I prefer to avoid.

Many of the niches in which the most money changes hands, most regularly, may be the ones in which it's going to be hardest for me to make money.

One of the ways I try to work out whether or not people are spending money in any given niche in which I'm potentially interested is to look carefully, over a period of time, at the Google AdWords ads which show up when searching for what are obviously the niche's main keywords. I look at how many there are, how quickly they "come round again", how long people are advertising for, and so on. If people are continuing to spend money on PPC advertising, then they're making money (and looking at their sites can help, too). I don't find it necessary to use Google's keyword research tool at all, to get a good indication of this.

Justin's and John's posts above (#6 and #9) look very helpful.

I know that just mentioning the word research can really scare a lot of new internet marketers but doing a little keyword research with Google Adwords keyword tool for example is nothing to be afraid of matter of fact is fairly simple but can also give you a big insight into what products or services are being searched for online by different niche markets online. There's nothing wrong with diving in to the most competitive niches. The best part about them is there is plenty of money to go around for everyone. One of the niches I'm crushing it in is as competitive as they come, but also has a ton of super passionate people who spend money. And it's not the make money online, health, or fitness niche (although I'm in those as well).

But if you're just starting out, which is the case for you, one suggestion to finding a niche to go into is to look at your own life and think about what you either:

a) Enjoy spending money on regularly
b) Spend money on regularly whether you like it or not
c) What your wife spends your money on

That would be a good place to start.
