Keyword Research Criteria to Find a Niche

Hi

Doing Keyword Research for a Niche. What is the Criteria to find a profitable niche?

Example: play guitar

1. on Google keyword tool
do you choose keyword at least 1000 searches per month or do you make it more like 50,000 /month.

then

go to google and type the keyword phrase

example on play guitar
I get 191,000,000 results

if i use quotes = "play guitar"
I get 11,000,000

if i use intitle:"play guitar"
I get 371, 000,000

if i use intitle:"playguitar"
i get 47,000

As you can see the number are decreasing.

so, is this the right way to do it or how do i need to do my research for finding profitable niches?

I'm just focusing on the numbers, at this time.

When I use the google keyword tool I set it to Exact or Phrase match and I also look at their suggestions. For the "play guitar" example I might consider "How to play guitar" or "Learn to play guitar" or even "Learn to play guitar at home" the possibilities are endless in all niches

First of all, I wouldn't get TOO caught up in keyword research. IMO, too many people obsess over finding the "right keywords" vs taking action.

    But, a few points:

1 - Don't obsess over the total number of results. Instead, focus on the top 10 (page 1) and, more importantly the top 3 results. This is your true competition. A free tool that can help with this is Free SEO Software | The Best SEO Management Tool | Traffic Travis

2 - If you want "easier" competition, go after long-tail keywords. 4 or 5 words, for example. And try to target buyer oriented keywords if you're promoting something. Example, instead of "play guitar," focus on "the quickest way to learn guitar," or "how to learn guitar fast," or "best online guitar course," etc.
