$300 to Reprint 129 Words for 30 Days

I saw this 129 word article on the Washington Times website and decided to check out the reprint rights option at the end of the article:

Overruled! Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia skipping State of the Union to give his own speech - Washington Times

There are two options:

1. Reprint on your website with included advertising for one month - free.

or

2. Reprint on your website with no ads for one month - $300.

My thoughts:

- No one in their right mind would pay $300 to reprint this article for a month, and I would be shocked if anyone did.

- The Washington Post does not make $300 per month from advertising for this story.

Maybe I am completely out of touch with big media reprint rights and values, but I suspect even big media still can't figure out how to make money online.

Here's an interesting kicker ... read the story again carefully. It is just a report of what was reported by another newspaper. It might even be a computer generated story.

For online reprint rights of this post please contact the author via the forum's PM system. Payment options conveniently include PayPal, Visa, MasterCard, and cash. Please specify how long you would like to have reprint rights. By quoting this post you agree to pay $300 per month for each month the quote appears.

lol wow... Yeah I would pay someone to go write me 20 descent posts for that price. They obviously are clueless...

Same here though... The local newspaper in my crap town. They wanted me to pay $375 to run a classified ad in the help wanted section. I was going to take a shot in the dark and see if there was anyone that could do a few things I needed done.

They called me, and I wasn't even trying to be a smartass when I started laughing... it just came out.

You want me to pay $375 for an add that will run 3 days, in a town that has like 6k people, where half are on welfare, to help the community by hiring locally right?

Not to mention it is highly unlikely I will get a response for what I need anyway. You probably have 3k subscribers at most...

What am I missing here? lol

To be honest Brian, that is probably a lot more than they would make if they allowed AP, Reuters or UPI to syndicate that article for them.

Consider this as an upsell option to make money on their content...

They can syndicate all of their content to the news aggregator companies for pennies on the story...

Or, we can use the content for free, if we give them more eyeballs for their advertisers..

Or, they can take a one-time up-sell price that is much higher than they would earn by giving value to their advertisers...

Since the price of paid syndication is so much higher, they are basically telling people that they can syndicate the content and support their paid advertisers in the process, or they can syndicate for a cost that is so obscene that most people will believe the first option is a darn good value.

    Two reasons -

The legal aspect. Stops people from stealing their stuff, kinda.

And the profit aspect. It makes sense?

Well, they should want people syndicating their content if it links back. So not really sure how that helps them in the long run. Since people syndicating it could bring them a lot more money then $300.

      129 words though I would probably pay them a $1.00... who am I kidding, no I wouldn't.
