When did you have to move from shared hosting to dedicated?

I thought I was decently verse in IM before coming to this forum, but after spending some time, money, and focus on various WSO's and other products, I can surely see how it's possible to generate lots of traffic, either in one burst or continual over time.
The problem I'm foreseeing (and don't want to have) is something like having a viral video "dugg" and my shared box suddely go down and then all that interested traffic is nowhere to be seen and won't come back.
So my question is, for those that moved from a shared hosting server to a dedicated server, where were you at, traffic-wise, to need to do that?
(And for those of you who are still on shared, what's been your biggest spike (or continual "high day") that you're seeing without it causing yo ua problem with the server temporarily not able to "serve" your interested viewers?)
