If you are german, you should provide the real name to facebook now.

Facebook has won a court battle against a German privacy watchdog that challenged the social networking site's policy requiring users to register with their real names.

    Unfortunate for those people looking to stay anonymous online. Even if you're not doing anything illegal, anonymity can be nice sometimes. I fear this is the direction the whole internet is going.

      It is and yet I am not exactly sure why. You can always give a fake name. What, are they going to start requiring you to send a photocopy of your ID just to use a social "fun" site like Facebook? It gets a bit ridiculous.

      If they are worried about people anonymously slandering others, they have plenty of other means to identify users hiding behind usernames, and which are very effective.

      But I have seen it. Youtube, every time now I try to comment on a video, is always trying to force me to use my real name. I just want to comment on a youtube video without having to make sure everyone in the world who knows me can find it, for goodness' sake. Sometimes we just want to not feel the eyes of the world are upon us. It gets a bit ridiculous, really.

    nobody is forcing you to use facebook. If you dont want them prying in to your business, just stay off fb!

    If I want to be anonymous, I can always use fake name and email while registering.

      Unfortunately Facebook acts as social proof and as a way to gather even more potential customers, so it is not as easy as staying off FB, at least if you have a business.

      I only use FB to log into and manage my fan page which has over 10k + interacting fans, and I sure do not want to stay off it despite I hate Facebook (and any social media for that matter). It has been 3 years since I've used FB for personal stuff (and even then I hardly used it).

      I wouldn't go as far as saying FB is a lie; Facebook lives off people's egos and needs for social validation. That, itself, is the core of their business, and thus works unsurprisingly good.
