Do You Learn From Your Own Online Habits?

I just bought The 4 Hour Work Week for the second time. No, it's not because I loved it so much, it's because I wanted to read it again.

I originally bought the PDF ebook version of the book. I can't remember where I bought it from though, and it's password protected. Guess what? I can't remember where I put the password either.

I'd had it unlocked and I guess I assumed it would stay that way, but I had to upgrade Adobe a week or two ago because I was getting errors when trying to open PDF files. And after that it wanted me to put in the password/unlock code to read the book again. Arggg

Rather than waste who knows how many hours trying to hunt down where I may have filed that little tidbit of info away, I went to my favorite ebook site (ereader.com) and bought it there. This site saves my entire buying history - I've been buying ebooks there since 1999 and I can redownload/reunlock any single one of those any time I want. When I change devices (I started with a palm pilot for example, and now use the reader on my tablet pc) I can reload my library onto the new device. As I understand it, the Amazon Kindle offers a similar setup.

These seemingly innocent conveniences - along with the headache and irritation at the Adobe PDF lock problem noted earlier - ensure that I will probably never buy another locked PDF ebook. Instead I'll stick to my tried, true, and reliable/trusted ereader system (until I eventually give in to the hankering for a Kindle :p )

The point of this post is that we can learn from ourselves when it comes to doing business online. If you don't like pop ups or float in windows, do you subject your prospects and customers to these anyway or do you honor the fact that they may hate them too?

Do you force your customers to jump through hoops like 5 million OTOs and/or required opt ins before they can get what they've already purchased even if you can't stand that practice yourself?

I personally try to stick to the golden rule approach. If I don't want something done to/happening to me, I try not to subject others to that same thing.

On a similar note, I use my own preferences, patterns and habits to help with niche research, site building and even product development too. A lot of people already know that I create products I want or need for my business, but I also tend to create websites around niches that I've found myself researching, looking for more information on, and so on.

I popped in here for a quick work break so sorry this is a bit of an unstructured ramble, but hopefully it makes sense
