Where should I focus my energy? Advice?

Hey guys, my situation is as follows:

I experimented with internet marketing around 18 months ago. I read and absorbed every piece of information/advice I could lay my hands on and created 5-6 websites, all of which didn't meet with any success.

Looking back now, I know I was making some really basic mistakes. For example, my approach was to make quick money, not to offer something of VALUE to potential customers. I was also taking a broad swipe at huge markets, not niches.

But it's not all bad news - in the past 18 months I have taken my content writing business to new levels, to the point where I could quit my day job. I regularly write approx. 30,000 words per month for clients, and I can easily pump out another 30,000 for my own projects.

So I'm ready to give IM another shot! I've learnt a lot from my 1st attempt, but I'm more interested in hearing your opinions on where I should focus my energy.

My strengths are:
  • Content (obviously),
  • SEO.
  • Research.
My weaknesses:
  • I have absolutely no idea about link building. Totally clueless.
  • I'm a little impatient.
  • I sometimes forget to stick to the basics and get lost in the fine details.
I'm also relatively competent in graphic design and building basic WordPress websites.

So what area of IM do you guys think I would be best suited for? Should I write eBooks and sell them through Amazon? Adsense? Affiliate marketing? List building?

I'm all ears

    Honestly, list building.

If you focus on just that one thing for the next few months you will easily start making money. Forget the rest and just focus on ONE thing -- it's the only way you will ever get anywhere.

I think the best part is that you were able to „diagnose” yourself correctly. Not everybody is aware of best parts and especially not so good aspects.
Seeking advice it one other plus for you. So I think you will soon find your way. Mind you, though! Every piece of advice may be general overview or simple guess. You will never know until you try it yourself.

    Good luck :-)

Great Thread! Patience is the first thing for me that I learned I needed to have. There is no such thing as fast cash as we all know. When you do things on the internet whether its free traffic or paid traffic it is going to take time to get the numbers you want. It's optimizing on a daily basis. I don't think Iv ever created a campaign and had a ROI right out the gate. You said you like or had a interest in SEO. I would learn about backlinking and onpage seo. Create your website or go back to the ones you have and work on them a little. Maybe write youself a PDF and give it away as a free report and build a list in a particular subject. IM is so large today and what we are talking about here is just one traffic source of many. Learn one source of traffic and learn to optimize your sites so you can generate a ROI then learn another source of traffic. I would stay away from PPC and PPV until you become a little more experiance. sending some fast PPC traffic is good to test your campaigns and figure out what your numbers are. It's going to take work. The trick is to build your list and have a SLO or self liquidating offer that will product some $$ on the front end.

Since your impatient (coupled with the fact that your weakness is link building), I wouldn't touch SEO. If you're going after anything remotely competitive, it can be a long, arduous road to get ranked. Most who are super impatient (like me) quit before they start seeing any results organically. That's why I turn to paid traffic sources... Instant results.

Follow the 80/20 Rule. 20% of your efforts will give you 80% of your results. If 80% of your results are coming from content development - then focus more on that. Then develop systems and process to help you become more efficient with that 20% effort

Go with a narrow niche, generate great content (blog, email newsletter, freebie incentive for opt ins) and get targeted traffic to your blog.

Before doing all of the above, be sure there is at least one great offer you can promote. Most niches have at least one great offer ... be sure to find it and promote it.

This should do it, but it won't generate huge money overnight.
