What's your real 'Why' for setting up an internet business

Here's a good question. What is the real core reason, the deep down 'why' that drives you towards setting up an internet business.

When I started in internet business 12 years ago, i though my goal was to simply replace my job, but I have since refined my goal to the nth degree to make it into the following statement.

"My goal is to support myself through self reliant multiple sources of passive income"

If you have ever read the fantastic Psycho-Cybernetics by Dr Maxwell Maltz, or Robert Kyosaki's seminal Rich Dad Poor Dad and The Cash flow Quadrant you'll probably understand that statement, however how far have you crafted and refined that statement to make it into the clearest, most focused statement that will cause your brain and body to automatically make your goal happen?

So I'd love to hear other peoples ultimate mission statements that drives them into or towards running a successful internet marketing business. C'mon let's inspire the Warrior Forum community with yours!

PerformanceMan, so what is the reason you want the money? Money itself can't be the core motivator, what would the money achieve for you? That's the core why that inspires you that I'd be interested to hear.

        Simon...

        I love the silver...
        I love the gold...
I love the lush green stuff that folds....

The only time I'm happy in life is when I'm getting paid. The only time I'm truly sad is when I have to spend it!

What this all means from a psychological standpoint is anyone's guess. If I had to guess I think that getting paid indicates I'm 'doing something right.' It serves as validation that my efforts are working and valued.

For me earning cash means I'm not screwing up. So I guess to some degree fear of failure is what motivates me to earn

Money can definitely be the core motivator. Financial independence is why most small business owners both online and offline go into business for themselves.

      LOL. Good point.

BUT, some income types are way more passive than others. While I definitely should do more with them, I have a couple of Kindle titles that funnel a few bucks a month to me without me doing a thing. THAT is truly passive, and I dig it.

Chi-Whiz, great to hear your Kindle titles are earning for you, I have a couple of titles on Amazon that bring in truly passive income, I found that iPad (iBooks) sales of my eBooks are outselling Kindle which is interesting, although I still make a steady sum from the print on demand physical sales too so paper books are not quite over yet.

      Haha this is funny.

I started my internet business to escape work. I still wake up early in the morning, but it only takes me about 2 hours a day to work on my business. The rest of my time is spent playing xbox.... and making out with my girl.

#1: To Motivate My Family To Achieve THEIR Goals

    I have a large family.

Many little cousins, 2nd cousins, big sisters, brother,
    mother, nephews, Aunties, Uncles.

Some I stay in constant contact with, some I don't
for no other reason other then their jobs -- not any
other reason -- get's in the way of life.

I want my financial success to PROVE it's possible.
That 'I' am that living reality they can model if they
    wish.

I want to be the one who everybody knows to be
the guy who makes 5-figures a month who can get
up and leave and live his life.

    ...no time clocks.

    ...no over-demanding bosses.

    ...no hard manual labor.

Just freedom to lead his life as he please with little
to no restrictions on the most valuable -- yet limited
    -- asset we share...

    Time.

I want to empower my family to achieve THEIR goals
and dreams...whatever that may mean to them.

To have the COURAGE to go forward in that direction.

...because so many lose sight of it at the face of a
challenge and settle for 'security' or guaranteed
    paychecks.

I have other strong reasons such as personal fulfillment.

Freedom to do as I 'please' and dress the way I want
    to dress.

Freedom to BE as I AM without changing my core
personality to suit a bosses vision of who I should be
    for a paycheck.

To help other small business owners with their goals.

To get directly involved in building water wells in third'
world areas so a clean drink of water is but a few steps
    away.

To help inner city youth see that if I can do it...they can
    to.

    That's it.

I have several reasons why...and they're all detailed.

This is a great thread. I will be coming back to it for my
    own inspiration.

I was born with an entrepreneurial mind set. It's just how I am. As soon as I was able to run a lemon aid stand...I was doing that every day, trying to increase conversion rates before I even know what conversion rates were.

I also happen to be good/have an interest in computers/internet.

Those three things combined are the reasons "why" I set up an Internet business.

Money itself can't be the core motivator
      Why not?

If you are responsible for paying to support yourself and others who depend on you - money gets real important real fast.

It's great to have dreams - but it's the money earned that allows you the time and resources to pursue your dreams. Money isn't "stuff" - it's "freedom".

The ability to work at something you enjoy or in niches you have interest in is icing on the cake - but unless someone else pays your way in life, money is often the core motivator.

Totally agree Kay, I think we're on the same page, however the freedom is the motivator, money is the tool that serves the goal of freedom, money does give freedom, totally, but the driver is freedom, not the money.

Totally agree that financial freedom = the purchase of the time and resources to pursue your passion.

Let's be honest were using semantics. My upbringing didn't have me thinking "money is a tool" All I knew, (and my friends) is we want money. All the mumbo jumbo matters, not, as long as the means to the end is results. Is this a market research study you doing for your students or ebook?

        • Profile picture of the author Kay King
For you, the motivator may be freedom but I still think it's money at the core. It's the cornerstone that supports your other goals in life.

Money is most important when you don't have it. When you have a secure income, money is less important as you can focus on other areas of your life. But any time that income is removed, the rest of your life can collapse.

The mistake new IMers often make is looking "for money" instead of focusing on building an income. Both involve earnings - one works and one doesn't.

I set up an internet business to hide that fact that people are dealing with an "old" person.
I consider myself "old" since I am almost 70, and find that people are reluctant to deal with me to some extent due to my age, they do not take me seriously and I honestly think some of believe I am going to die right in front of them. There is some truth to their thoughts. I am not that active anymore, have arthritis and I do take a 20 min nap every afternoon. So I created an on line image that leads people to think they are dealing with a man in his 50s and the age issue never comes up as a problem. I sell coaching in an area where my internet age dovetails with with someone at the top of their game. My phone voice does not give away my age and I can honestly say I am the best there is out there in my area of coaching, so there is no issue of less than top quality work. Ten years of selling info products and coaching and not one complaint. So thanks to having an internet business this old guy gets to live on doing what he loves and delivering quality results.

    Thanks, Ed

I started IM for the mobile lifestyle, working for myself, setting own hours and no earning ceiling. I think we all like these benefits.

However, now it's about building great businesses and loving what I do. I'd never have stuck it out had I not liked this stuff. It's not easy and it's rife with failures. However, successes, happy readers, emails from readers saying "thanks" and watching websites succeed is really fun. I also love my niches so I enjoy writing on these topics each week.

In what other job can you make money writing about what you like doing? I'm in a fitness niche because I've been into fitness since I was 15. I'm in another niche based on my 15 plus years personal experience. I'm in yet another niche based on my professional training ... but I get to participate in my chosen profession on my terms rather than having a boss and difficult clients.

You really can't beat this gig. I look forward to waking up each day and getting started ... and that's living the dream!!

I also have family in the US and like to go there ever 12-18 months just to see them.

For me it is passive income. I already had 6 figure work, wasn't getting to go on holidays, and didn't feel like my lifestyle really felt like I did. I wanted options, and initially thought that IM could give me that part time.

Ultimately I want to be able to go help people in other countries, build schools and stuff like that. Get to travel around a lot more, but actually do some good. That's my end goal.

I want to have an alternate form of income in case I end up in a position where I am unemployed.

I'm also looking at going back to college this fall. Having an internet business that brings in income means I don't need as many hours at an outside job, so I can focus more on college.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[7749400].message }}
  • I'd say my biggest "why" is location independence. Running a business online allowed me to live in Southeast Asia for quite a few years. I've been home for about a year now but am planning to hit the road again in a couple weeks as soon as I cash out my current vehicle.

I'm also a huge fan of having total choice over when I work and how often, though I must admit that's a double-edged sword that's cut into my fingers many more times than once.

Then there's the money. Depending on what you're into, online income can pay extremely well. I'd have to go through a lot of training/education before I'd ever match the hourly I bring in on the web.

I won't lie - I do miss having an ordinary job sometimes. A set place where I can show up and socialize. Never having to worry about keeping the pipeline full enough to fill my hours. A resume without holes. A title that gets people to stop questioning when I'm going to "do something" wit my life... LOL

But whenever I stop to think about what I'd be trading - a fully location-independent business for a location-specific job and a decrease in money - I come to my senses. I'd be miserable if I ever went back to the real world. I might enjoy if at first but after a bit of time I'd be kicking myself in the a** pretty hard.

Well said. I +1 for this

Having a boss is a big pain in the ass. Looking at it from the other side, so is having employees. If you are able to free yourself from one of the previous 2 conditions, without a major sacrifice in lifestyle, why not?
