Does anyone still make real money with Adsense nowadays?

Hi everyone,

My main website (metropolasia com) has s'thing like 33,000 unique visitors which yield 600 clicks (slightly less than 2%) which make for me just slightly more than US$ 200 per month. :-(

What can I do to significantly improve it (if anything)?

Cheers, Roni

Well all I can say is that it maybe time to add other ways to monetize with your site to increase your monthly income.
    Hope this helps.

I do have other ways to monetize, of course. I just thought there is a way to make more than US$ 200 per month from Adense... After all, Adsense niche sites used to be a business some time back...

Hey there, I don't see any adwords in your site after I take a brief look at your site. Since it is rich of valuable article I suggest to register on adsense. You can monetize your quality article by adding adwords in between your article. The design is not convincing, it is a old site, am I right? have you ever tried to renew it? consult to a web developer expert and hear what they have to say. It might help you improve the site's rating in Google page rank.

I do have Adsense ads on each every one of the pages (mostly on the sides though, which means I will seriously need to do different tests, as some of the fellow warriors suggested). My site is from 2008 and I'm not sure what is wrong with its design... Could you please give me an example of what a properly-designed website should look like ?

        Many thanks, Roni

I have two sites getting about the same traffic. You need to keep the visitor on your site as long as possible..keeping them engaged about the subject/niche. I did not look at your site yet. I use my adsense money to be put back into the site & to buy ads (for more traffic).

    Roni,

Sorry to hear your site is not performing well with Adsense. Hopefully another Warrior here can give you some ideas. I know its tough to ignore something you put a lot of time and effort into. Perhaps you may want to put your efforts into a more profitable site and just let this one bank you a couple hundred bucks every month.

I am in the same boat with a travel site. I really like it but it no longer makes sense for me to work on it. I only put a couple hours a month into it and it gets me a couple hundred bucks a month between April and October. So in my book the site makes me about 75 bucks an hour for the work I put into it.

You always have the option to sell the site, someone may see some value in it that you dont. With that kind of traffic it should do well at auction.

Thanks Scrambler, I actually don't spend more than 10 hours a month on this website, and it makes more than US$ 200 cause I also have hotel-booking affiliate links, and other affiliate links to guided day trips, discount cards, tourist activities and so on...

I was just hoping there's a way to get more than US$ 200 from 33,000 unique visitors, in terms of Adsense income... It's really pathetic ! The whole world talks about how prohibitively expensive Google ads have become... How come guys like us see less money than before ??? Doesn't make sense....

i have said this before and I will say it again.
I find that the only way to really make real money on the internet is by having a unique product that solves a problem and selling it at the right price.

All I can say is that adsense, parking, etc. basically does not make sense.

You have 33,000 visitors and make only $200.00 a month-Thats barely enough to pay my phone, cable T.V. and internet connection.

I don't understand the math on why people spend all this time generating all this traffic for basically nothing.

I was reading about a person who had very high valued domain names that receive many browser type in's. He pulled them out of parking even though we was making a lot more that $200 a month (I think it was closer to $1,000 a month) for doing absolutely nothing

His logic was that the people using his traffic were making a heck of a lot more money than what he was getting.

        I believe he is right.

    Hi Roni,

I think you can try to monetize your site in other ways:

Why not sell leads to travel agencies or ads to hotels etc.?

If you can sell the leads/ the ads in a decent amount of money then I'm sure you can make more than $200 a month.

Hey Roni, if you're getting that many visits to your site, take one of the spots that you have Adsense displayed and offer your customers advertising for a decent amount. (not sure if you're doing this already). You can collect more doing your own advertising and keep a banner there for a week's time.. just make sure to calculate your earnings from Adsense, and then charge a rate that would bank you more for their adspot. Just a thought and suggestion. Best of success to you.

        Sure.

        1. Be in it for the long haul. This person works his arse off.
        2. Build a community. He gets about 5,500 visits a day.
        3. Operate in the right marketplace. Its pointless trying to make money with Adsense if the theme of your website is about knitting.

Adsense can be a business that you can rely on and one that Google will look on favorably if you strictly follow their policies and their rules. I put two Banner Ads for affiliate products that also get people's attention. But main focus is Adsense on these sites! And the Content is unique and original and helpful. I just need to scale it up ! It is ALL organic traffic.

Some stats you might fine interesting.

            All Time Performance for me
            April 3 20008 - May 1st 2013

            First blog of mine
            16,425- Page Views

            2,759- Clicks

            16.80%- CTR

            $1.21- CPC

            $203.87 - Page RPM

            $3,348.61 - Estimated Earnings

            Another Blog
            62,967- Page Views

            7,689- Clicks

            12.21%-CTR

            $0.42-CPC

            $51.13-Page RPM

            $3,219.75- Estimated Earnings

This is all on auto pilot. Not trying to brag but just show the potential with Adsense if you choose the right niche!

And i know I need to ramp up with more Articles and some SEO and continue to be updated with Google changing their policies.

But you can definitely make serious money with only organic traffic for Adsense, contrary to what some have said in this thread !!

That's $.33 on average per click. Not terrible. Your CTR isn't bad. Either get more traffic or monetize in additional ways (or both of course). Selling banner ads may be more profitable, but requires admin time. I'd definitely look for affiliate offers to promote with that kind of traffic.

Play with the placement. Don't just throw ads and leave them there.

In my experience ads placed above the article (between the headline and the main article text) works best.

On some sites I get at least 7 to 15% CTR on my ads.

Color scheme plays important role too.

Try blending them to your site and try completely opposite (colors that stand out, such as bright red or yellow.)

And make sure you track your results.

I thought 5% was a very high CTR for Adsense and more than that could lead to having the account banned. Something to do with Google associating anything above 5% with an Adsense-click ring, which have been notorious in the past.

Having said that, I'm reading some of you have 10+%, so I must have read wrong or it's a rumour I read.

My income from AdSense has been marginal (most income arises from offline advertising sales) but Google has annointed me as a moderator (top contributor) on the AdSense help forums. Some of my peers in this rather exclusive group make decent money, but most report a significant decline in earnings over the years and a few have thrown in the towel. Speculation is that the content network inventory/click through quality and competition is such that the ppc levels are lower than many would like.

Generally, the suggestion is that if your site is good enough to have a niche traffic and relevant audience, you'll always do far better selling your own ads directly to the end-users (as others have suggested here).

I would certainly not try to stake my livelihood on AdSense (though it certainly can work well to supplement and fill in slots for some useful additional income.)

I've found in my experience I can earn up to two orders of magnitude greater revenue through direct sales. To give some numbers: Some advertiser will pay up to $200 a month for a spot which might generate a few $2.00 clicks on AdSense.

Of course, this is a targeted specific industry niche, and we've built relationships in the community for quite a few years. But I sense that if the ad is "exclusive" nad you have genuine traffic, (and can show the click through potential) you might be able to get a few hundred dollars a month per page to the right advertiser.

One rather unusual technique I've used in setting prices (with people I know well, and can verify their response) is to ask them what they think is fair. This especially works if you know they are advertising elsewhere extensively -- so they have a pretty good idea of prices in the marketplace, and also they have a budget to spend. (If the price they want to pay is above what we will sell, obviously good, if it is below, then the decision comes down to whether we want the business or not (or whether we can get them to pay a bit more.)

In all due respect I have never heard of such miserable CTRs and CPCs. Honestly, I have a Site that has never averaged less than 13% CTR for the last 4 years with a CPC around $2.

If I could only increase traffic to 33,000 a day that would be like $8,500 or more a month with your traffic.

I think I would definitely monetize other ways and start growing a List to offer things to visitors

13% CTR and $2 cpc is amazing, particularly the 13% CTR. Is your site a bit MFA? I tend to find with adsense you get higher CTR on lower quality sites while lower CTR on higher quality sites. The CTR on my main site is around 1.5% even though the placements are good (inside content) and matching colour with overall colour scheme of the site.

None of my sites are MFA but I do find there is a trend that the higer the quality of the site, the lower the CTR. People have less reason to click on ads if they find the solution they are after.

I hear stuff like comment from Discrat, who is getting incredible CTR and CPC's, then there are also plenty on the other side of the coin. Personally, I had a site that was averaging OVER 30k uniques/month and I was bringing in roughly $30 bucks a month, so don't feel bad.

I think my CTR was under .5% and my CPC was also under .50 cents. So there you go, another now low for people like Discrat to hear about

I think adsense earnings are also very niche dependent as well, and also where your visitors come from and where they were visiting before they landed on your site also play a role in determining your CPC.

In all seriousness, I think you are doing just fine with adsense for your site. What is wrong with $200 a month on adsense alone... pretty good in my estimation.

I think the best option, if you are eager to get more out of adsense would be to start a new site. You could niche down further on what you have already established and prbably get another $200/ month site going in a while (from adsense)

The other 'quick fix' solutions to test would be

      1. Test new ad placements
      2. Get TOTALLY RID of low paying bidders for your ad spots.

The last one is an option in adsense, and sort of blacklists the cheapest advertisiers from getting ad space on your site.

You should start by adding more good content. More content allows you to target more keywords, which then allows you to get more visitors.

Consider using another monetization method. AdSense is good for some, but many people find that their earnings double or triple if they use another monetization method. You could sell your own product, make a list and market to them, put up affiliate ads, etc.

You should also think about getting an updated design. No offense, but your design isn't that great. It's bland and doesn't inspire me to read your content or click the ads. I would hire a designer or buy a good stock design.

Expresso, I work in a specialized niche, have high rankings within that space, but wouldn't think of using advertising to drive traffic. Google frowns highly on arbitrage (using low-cost advertising to generate high-paying clickthroughs) and periodically, I need to calm down publishers who have lost thousands of dollars in "assumed" income because their accounts were disabled after they forked over a small fortune in advertising. (I have the somewhat unusual status of being the only person to experience the dreaded "account disabled" email to survive with a valid account and receive an expense-paid invitation to Mountain View.)

Best advice: If you cannot generate your traffic organically -- and I mean by pure SEO (no black hat methods) don't play around with AdSense, unless you want to risk your account there.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[7751591].message }}

Sorry, but this is a joke. SEO as a whole (according with Google) is blackhat and frowned upon. By actively trying to 'rank' your site in the search engines, you are by very definition trying to 'game' the system which is a big no no in Googles eyes (or so they say).

      Coming out and saying:

"Well I'm driving traffic organically through 'whitehat' SEO, and I am totally safe, and this is the only way that you should be doing things and the only way that Google will really approve of"....

Is pretty absurd in my opinion. That would be like giving me the one or two methods that the US government 'approves' of to grow and distribute marajuana. It's all very frowned upon (according to the government) but of course, they turn a blind eye when they see fit.

Does that make SEO better than finding creative ways to drive traffic (and possibly using some paid methods) and making a few bucks?

According to what you are saying, yes. According to Google, however, both methods of driving traffic go against what they say they want publicly.

Direct click arbatrage is definitely against Adsense TOS, I just don't see why one method (SEO) is consider 'OK, great, proper and whitehat' while any paid methods are considered illicit.

When I opened your site and clicked through a few pages, I noticed that you're using text Adsense ads only (at least that's all that came up for me). Have you tried allowing banner ads yet? That may improve the click through rate. It did for one of my sites that had an abysmal click-through rate.

High CTR is only one indication of a possible "problem" -- I think Google uses a variety of tools to check on the validity and invalid clicks. Essentially, if the traffic is natural, and there aren't tricks to induce invalid clicks, a high CTR isn't a concern (and of course it is good for the publisher). I think the age, genre and site volume also would be factors -- if someone out of the blue shows up with high traffic and huge CTR you can be quite confident the bots will flag it, and then some humans will look at things and if they aren't right, the "account disabled" emails will be sent.

I believe people are still making good income from Adsense or else Adsense will not be around. I think the next logical thing that you want to do is to collect the visitors details before directing them to the website with the content.

With their contacts, you will still be able to follow up with them through email and you can direct them to the website whenever you have new piece of content. The most important thing is that you will be able to constantly follow up with them through email.

    Just my 2 cents

Google is making more money than ever from Adwords through their search and display network. Logic would suggest site owners must be pocketing more because Google still pays out at the same ratio as before.

Some of your posts/pages don't have adsense code at the beginning of the content, which is one of the highest clicked areas for ads.

Someone earlier mentioned testing, and this is very, very true. Test different colors & backgrounds to see what converts best for You.

I'd also test and see if graphic banners get clicked more... sometimes they do. They might for you.

Your ctr can be brought up, the only way to know for sure what will or won't work on your site is to test it yourself. If you never test, you'll never know.

    Hi Roni,

I have browsed through a couple of pages and noted that your site is not optimized for ads click-through. Compared to this (i just randomly did a search in google, I am not affiliated to it at all):

AdSense Tips for Newbies & Low Earners

You see how the ads are placed and displayed.

For now, your ads are created not to be clicked through. Try to follow google official guide for adsense. To compensate your monetarization model, consider applying agoda.com and a few other travel affiliate programs, which may help.

You've got impressive traffic; you just need a way to convert them.

    Study the google heat map.

Heat map for pages - AdSense Help

You may better place your ads.

    Hope it helps.
