What's the big deal about Twitter?

Ok is it just me, or is everyone now fascinated with Twitter and using it as a tool to build their business? I understand the value social networking sites like Facebook & Myspace have on building relationships and having new people to talk to about your business. I've been using those sites years before everyone started using them.

But what's the big deal about Twitter? Isn't it just a bunch of people reading your activity? I honestly haven't even signed into it, but have seen a lot of my friend's accounts. I have a friend in the music industry and he uses it to let his fan base know when and where there next shows are at. But is Twitter really essential to do that? Can't we all do that using Facebook?

I'd really be interested to get feedback on people's experiences and arguments for and against Twitter.

If you don't sign up for twitter soon, I guarantee you, you will regret it. I've known about micro-blogging for quite a long time now (about nine months), and to my detriment have been slow to act on utilizing the power that it has to generate massive amounts of traffic and quality sales. Like you, I didn't understand how the concept of telling people "what I'm doing now" could, in any way, benefit me as a marketer, or even more importantly, strengthen my bottom line.

What I failed to recognize was that much like other sites like Facebook and MySpace, a sizable presence on twitter can create instant credibility and position you as a leading authority in your niche. When people go to your twitter page, if it's set up correctly, they will read your biography (and perhaps any other tidbits about yourself that you've embedded in the background design), look at your followers, quickly determine if your services could be advantageous to them, and out of pure curiosity, they will often click on the link to visit your website.

When you think about twitter, don't think of it as much as a marketing tool but rather (like myspace) as a huge party that you are throwing. Sure everybody at the party has a "business card" with your contact info included (i.e. your profile design and biz url) , but the party is more about networking and establishing relationships. Just like if you hosted a "kick butt" social gathering in the real world, if everyone felt great about the experience, they would be inclined to get that "who in the heck is this guy complex". That is what will generate the traffic to your business, and it will be the best kind because your prospect will have already been subjected to massive amounts of social proof and therefore be highly targeted and pre-qualified. They will also feel like you're a real person, with a real business, who can be contacted and corresponded with, and not some random marketing machine ran by goodness knows who.

Think about it as an extension of reality television. If you can make your life interesting, perhaps perceived to be that of a celebrity or famous personality's, then people will ultimately want to be a part of the world that you have created.

Take my advice my friend, join twitter before it becomes like myspace and it's too late, if nothing else but to experiment with it and determine if it's right for your particular style of marketing. I'm pretty sure, however, that at the end of the day, you won't be regretful. Just look at marketers like Maria Andros who recently pulled off a huge six-figure launch using twitter as her main source of traffic (notwithstanding a few choice JV mailings, in all fairness). If there wasn't something to it, twitter would have been abandoned by the marketing community a long time ago.

      Cheers,

      JP

I really do not understand why anyone would want to update the world every time they make a cup of coffee and go for a pee. Even more, I do not understand why anyone else would want to know.

Why is 26 characters better than 140? Is this video a spoof or is this really happening?

That's because not everyone who uses Twitter uses it for those purposes.

I've only been on Twitter for a few weeks, but one of the most amazing things to me about it is that the people I'm following can share stuff with me that I otherwise would normally not know existed. It's a tool for sharing ideas, products, and services. It's a hub of communication that's cool, easy to use, and easy to get comfortable with.

I'm not addicted to Twitter (you can tell that by the frequency of my tweets), but I do check it daily for the very reasons I specified above. I think it's wonderful.

It's not about this or that. The whole point is to diversify your means of communication. Any good business person incorporates diversity into as many aspects of their business as possible: having several suppliers, several merchant accounts, using several PPC advertisers (not just AdWords lol what a joke!), several affiliate networks, several ad networks (yes they're different!), etc. Get the picture?

If you don't like Twitter and your business is doing so well that you can't even fathom growing beyond where you are currently, then simply don't sign up. No one's gonna force you to join.

The fact is, many of us are making good connections and a bit of income from Twitter alone. Notice the order and phrasing: "good connections," "bit of income." Not saying you'll make a fortune because of Twitter alone, but it's very viable to acquire many new customers.

One of the interesting things to watch develop is how many people show up in here and beat their drum of "STOP DOING WHAT EVERYBODY ELSE IS DOING" Don't follow the heard.

Then they promptly extol the virtues of Twitter because 'everyone' they know is doing it. The entire idea behind Twitter it is 'following.' Again, another fascinating dynamic.

"DON"T FOLLOW ANYONE" unless it's me and I'm Twitter.

As Richard Odell pointed, it's nothing more than a passing fad and the proverbial flavor-of-the-month.

@JP ... your explanation is one of the best I have heard in a while. I started using Twitter shortly after they launched, but didn't really understand it, did nothing with the user ID I created, and then in 2007 realized I might want to start developing a personal brand.

It wasn't until I read a post in a blog that likened Twitter and all social media to a party, and that was the aha moment for me. (about 3 months ago) ever since then I have been having a blast just getting to know people online and offline as well.

Something one may want to take a look at is your local area too, I had been accustomed to the wide reach of the internet and forgot there is a vibrant community in my backyard with some great people.

I'm of the opinion that Twitter is here to stay, it's more than just a fad, some are even claiming it to be web 3.0. I remembered when Facebook was being criticized for turning down a 1 billion dollar buyout (can't remember if it was AOL or Yahoo) the critics were claiming that Facebook will have the same fate as MySpace and they will start to decline once the newest sensation hits and everyone jumps ship to it. ... Well, it hasn't happened yet, and has anyone seen what Facebook is valued at today ???

So many people get started with Twitter and "don't get it." I think one reason for this is that Twitter, at its best, is highly social and many Internet Marketers are not all that social. Obviously there are plenty of exceptions, but I've watched the Twitter activity of some top Internet Marketers and that's my impression. Twitter masters step into the middle of this virtual cocktail party and really engage others.

Is Twitter mandatory? Of course not, but if you want to go where your customers are, it's probably a good idea to figure it out.

The thing about Twitter is that it's microblogging at its best. Following and un-following users is extremely simple and doesn't require the extra steps Facebook/Myspace require you to go through. Profile customization is quick, simple, and elegant. It's even simpler than Facebook. By offering less options and keeping the service straight to the point, Twitter is able to appeal to the masses because of its simplicity. You don't have to be followed back in order to read somebody else's tweets on the service, which makes it much more appealing to celebrities who just want to post their daily life in short bursts of SMS-length messages and occasionally reply to a fan or two without having to go through a tedious process of singing in their WordPress or Blogger account and writing out a long post just to say something.

If you haven't been on Twitter yet, I highly suggest you try it out!

      Hilarious video - love it

You can use Twitter for 10-15 minutes per day and still build relationships and bring traffic

Twitter isn't going anywhere...where else can I communicate with GaryVee, ChrisGx3, Chris Brogan, my clients, my prospects, and my friends all in one place?

Twitter might become something else in the evolution of technology, but it isn't going to disappear as a fad.

Hell, I can see hardware being created for Twitter, like a mini-twitter laptop you sit next to your PC...yes I'm serious.

Twitter is great for branding, building relationships, funneling people to Facebook, etc.

That's called an iPhone, Blackberry, or a Netbook There are plenty of Twitter clients out there for mobile devices already. If you own an iPhone, I definitely recommend paying the $2.99 for Tweetie. It is simply the best Twitter client out there. Landscape mode replies, multiple account integration, and a very clean layout. Prior to getting it I was using Twitterific Premium ($9.99), but it simply could not catch up with Tweetie in terms of functionality so I made the jump and will not look back!

I like to incorporate my twitter feed into my personal website just to give it more of a human feel. I think if you are trying to sell a product, people don't want to deal with a faceless screen. They want some sense of connection. Its also a great way to keep your customers updated about current happenings on your website without having to code/FTP or login to word press. Its a good tool depending on how you use it.

I can't believe the # of spinoffs words Twitter has created (tweets, twits, tweetdeck, tweetlater, bubbletweet, twollow, etc.) I'm not sure how I received almost 1000 followers in a matter of months.

I have gotten great info from Twitter once you know who to follow. Mike Dillard did me a great favor when he sent an email saying he would be "unfollowing" 1000s because they weren't true followees of his and not to be offended.

So he went from following 10,000 to just under 1,000. Well his "true" list showed me some quality tweeters that he admired. Just a little confused about the benefit of hashtags.

    Cheers!

    Haha Josh that is Awesome!

a few ways to use Twitter:

Businesses - Customer Support, Acquisition and Branding
Personal Basis - Branding, Networking, increasing interest in your products
Niche Websites - Broadening customer base, getting to know your market (research etc.)

I'm not saying stick to any rules here, but try and stay productive, Twitter can be a BIG distraction, set some time aside within your daily schedule, 20-30 minutes a day for Tweeting.

    Good luck

So, I'm trying to get in the twitter mix and am real new, so I have quite a few questions.
      1. Does anyone have any advice on twitter tools ? I've heard Hummingbird is good. I'm just waiting on my next check to come so i can buy it with my discount code. But what else is out there that will get me into the 4-600 dollar a day range that I know people are making?
      2. Everyone says that twitter is all about targeted traffic. What do most of you guys drive your traffic too? CPA Offers? Opt-in lists? Products? Do any of you guys use http://twtad.com (No referral link, just a link for your perusal)?
      3. Has anyone seen the twitter traffic machine by Bill Crosby at http://twittertrafficmachine.com? It looks AMAZING :p, but once again, I don't want to spend the money on something that isn't worth the price of admission.

Any advice from this great forum would be GREATLY appreciated !

To me its all about communicating with others having fun and making money at the same time. Think about how big it is - i launched a new blog last week and through using an unknown twitter account i got over 1,000 targeted hits in the space of a couple of days. how many articles would you have to write to get the same success?
