WestHost Fried Again?

Can't get to my sites, can't get to WestHost, and can't get to support (they use VOIP). C7 says they're having a problem. That's an understatement.

Last time they went down, it lasted a month.

Anyone else on the same servers or in the same datacenter?

  • I don't use WestHost, but found their Twitter: https://twitter.com/WestHost

    Appears they're having some issues.
  • Maybe it's time to change your provider?
  • After a hosting company went down for a full month, that'd be the last time I use them.

    • Down for a month?! Was that a typo? And you still use them?

That's pretty terrible service right there.
  • do you know the particular server your site is hosted on?
if yes, check this out: WestHost - Network Status

if no, you better find out

as for everybody else, do you know of other hosting companies that offer a similar "netstatus" service as i posted above? i've been using a few hosting providers but westhost are the only ones in my experience that have this.

looking forward to your input on this.. should be interesting to know.

    • It says right on their contact page that they're having an outage: Web Hosting, Reseller Hosting, Dedicated Servers, Domain Registration - WestHost

Yes, every single company that uses a server has the ability to do this. It's also extremely easy to make that page on your own. I mean, if you're basing your service provider off of a status page that contains real or non-existent servers in table, I can throw together a page in a few minutes with a bunch of check marks to achieve that.

  • I am amazed at your patience - a month and no site! I think you should seriously look at changing to another hosting company.

In a month you would lose all your forward momentum and how do you go without a site. If you are truly treating this as a business make the decision to change hosting providers.
  • I have my sites pinged for their status every 15 minutes. In 4 years they have never been down more than 2 pings at a time. There only were a couple of those down for 2 pings and they were at about 2 or 3 in the morning, so I assumed routine work.

I'm not sure just what my limit is, but if it got to more than a couple of hours without at least an answer, I would have everything uploaded to a new host.

    • Sorry to be late checking back in. I have been online all day learning how to use Stripe (http://stripe.com) which looks like it will be my payment processor of choice, going forward.

Anyhoo, I was on with WestHost support today and they got a massive DDOS attack against one of their servers yesterday. Only being out for a few hours after that type of attack is good work, I think.

About the month thing for me. The actual sites that were out a month for me weren't very active. My main sites were back up in just a few days. I did experiment with HostGator in that time, and went back to WestHost because of the level of flexibility their servers gave me for the price. (I am still on 1997 pricing with them. Been there awhile.)

      Cheers

  • Go ahead and switch on over to Hostgator, GoDaddy, BlueHost, or Yahoo Webhosting to avoid this lack of concern for customers. Shoot... Freehostia doesn't even have these kinds of problems.
