Website dropped in ranks overnight

Hey guys I am just wondering if you could help a novice user out here. Since mid Jan I have noticed my website traffic fall dramatically. I use to get in region of 100 unique new visitors a day, and now only get on average 30 unique new visitors.

Upon further research I have noticed that my site is not ranking as high up in Google anymore either. I have about 287 backlinks at present.

I use to rank top 5 on page 1 google but now my keywords have dropped to page 2/page 3

I noticed this happened around 17th Jan / 22nd Jan

Anyone know what might have happened? Or has Google changed something?

Your help would be very much appreciated

    It isn't always that Google has updated - it's very possible that some of your competitors have simply started doing more SEO. Have you compared your site to theirs so see why they may be ranking better?

    Google did update their algorithmic techniques around that time.. so it's possible that could be the cause of it... No sweat ... just stick to High PR backlinks and article submissions and you will get back up there in no time..
