Approach to Site/Blog monetization in 2013?

I've been out of the loop since penguin (goodbye my beautifuls ). Fortunately, I made it out of the mess still self-employed and am almost in a position to start building my own sites again full time.

From what I can tell, the IM landscape looks like it favors networking above all else (high-trust link network, solid social presence), but I'm also curious if any other strategies have popped up since then.

My current plan is launch site (site+blog), launch social media, run everything through authorship and start guest posts and go for a 2-3 month strategy. Is this still out the window for a mostly white-hat strategy? I say mostly because I like to swim in the grey area and anything now, as you well know, might be ex post facto banned by google.

Conversions will be the easy part, as I'm working with a $25 and $30 conversion that are pretty easy @1/2%, so I'm only aiming for 100-400 uniques per day from all sources (SEO & Syndication) for the first site. Once I have the extra $1500-6500~ coming in, I can safely transition back to internet marketing and live more closely aligned with the stuff I really care about.

If you have any good reads or watches from the last few months, I'd love to see/read them. Anything official from Google, post-penguin SEOmoz vids, great articles, emerging markets, etc - all are appreciated. I am rebuilding from square one and starting with trendwatching + elbow grease.

Thanks,
-Adam
