  • NA5H3R,

There are a lot of places you could learn to write. You could try checking into some local or online creative writing courses at a community college or vocational school. There also seems to be a lot of options for online courses by just searching for online writing courses. I would suggest you start there. You could also just practice writing every day and you will eventually get better at it.

Perhaps you can find more info here,

OP, whilst your enthusiasm is most admirable, and with the greatest respect to you, I would seriously rethink considering article writing as a career move. The reason why? . . . well, to start with it's a cutthroat market where only the very best will achieve a good standard of living. Secondly, it's a completely saturated market where literally tens of thousands of wannabe writers of all levels of competence are vying for business . . . and as such the prices are forced down to such a level that only the very best, proven top quality writers, will command rates commensurate with their skills. Thirdly, you start at a huge disadvantage as you have no experience or skills.

Unfortunately, many people think that writing is an easy business to jump into, but the reality is sadly a hard learning curve. My personal estimate (from 30 years experience) is that at least 95% of article writers start and remain at the bottom level in terms of work and pay (from those who don't give up), and the pay is truly bad. It takes many, many years of perseverance, dedication, sacrifice, and learning, to even step up a rung or two. And that's if you're one of the lucky one's. You see creative writing is a skill that you either have or don't, and it's extremely difficult to learn to a quality standard.

For what it's worth, my advice to you would be:

If you're adamant that article writing is your chosen path then do it for yourself. Read up on as many articles and courses on the subject as you can and if you find you have a knack for it, use those skills to build something for yourself. Not only are the rewards much greater, but the satisfaction is sweeter.

Alternatively, find another means of earning a fair and reliable income, whether from IM or not. There are thousands to choose from, and the greater majority will be easier to learn than attempting to become a writer, with no skills or experience.

      Best wishes in your endeavours.

  • Hi there!

In a few days time I'll be releasing a free eBook to the War Room with exactly this, I would post some tips here but trying to keep them for WR members only.

    Keep an eye out

    Jamie.
  • Just read a lot and write a lot. You can never get better at writing if you never do it. If you don't like writing, then you can always use writers to make articles for you and sell them for a premium.
  • Hi there,

You only think you HAVE NO SKILLS, you most certainly have some but need to hone them! There are lots of places where you can buy guides and short E-books, but I truly believe that the best thing to do is pick a topic, decide on a title, read, read and read about the topic, and get writing!

I started with the 4 day money making blueprint by David Bocock and learnt a lot there! Tiffany Dow is another great writer who knows her stuff and I think she has a couple of E-books on the subject.

But then again, practice, practice and practice!

You can always check out some samples of my writing on my ghostwriting site and see the different styles etc!

    Good luck to you

  • How serious are you about making money? It is hard to beat Angela Booth...

Angela Booth: Copywriter, Ghostwriter, Web Content Creator, Writing Teacher

I have learned a lot from her over the years.
  • I'm also interest with this but not for business. I want to write for myself so that I could have more skill to review my outsource writers as well as write something up by myself.
  • I write for a living. I make a decent living at what I do. The best advice I can give you is that you should write out of PASSION. I write upwards of 12,000 words per day. I am only able to do this because I actually LOVE reading, learning, and writing. I experiment constantly and I keep pushing the envelope. Whether you are digging ditches, cleaning up garbage, healing people, or writing, if you LOVE what you do, you will be successful. The real measure of success is not money. The real compensation is the realization that you are LIVING A MEANINGFUL LIFE.
  • There are some places where you can get access to article templates which make your writing job easier. You can go to EzineArticles website to purchase their deck of card which contains 52 different article templates.

Besides using the template, it is important to do some research and get relevant content. There are some warriors here who make a good living from writing and you might want to take note of them.
  • In any case, I'd ratherhave a "dry" style than follow Ferguson in writing articles that ape the sneering populism of a Daily Mail leader, Richard Evans Regius Professor of history,

  • Writing for search engines is a learned process. You don’t have to be a “gifted writer” with a broad vocabulary, thats what online dictionaries and thesaurus.com is for. You just need to understand the qualifiers search engines look for when evaluating a web page (e.g relationship of title to body text, keyword area placement, supporting keywords, format, etc). What matters is results you obtain...providing articles to customers that rank well in search engines. This will equal success.

You don’t need to enroll in classes, but it probably wouldn’t hurt. My suggestion would be to learn how to write effective titles, introductions, body paragraphs and summaries on a college level. Learn how to stay on title topic and eliminate wordy sentences to keep your keywords grouped together which translates to keyword rich pages and how often your pages will be located and presented to web surfers.

    • I agree that SEO should be considered (to a point) when writing content.

However, the things you described are just one small factor in SEO. Remember search engines have improved immensely and the whole point of them is to find the best & most relevant site for the user. Always write with the reader in mind first, and the search engine a distant second. You want your site to be interesting and informative for visitors.

In short, You do NOT want to write for search engines. Write for people.

  • I am never good in writing but I guess in whatever field you want to pursue you always achieve great results if you study hard so I guess its best to research and study some online courses which will develop your writing skills.
  • Have you thought about going in a different direction - creating audios that you record as mp3 files, read from free PLR? Yes, free PLR is out there, but you'll have to tidy up the writing.

But if writing whole articles seems a bit overwhelming, use this as a jumping off point to think of other ways you can repurpose content - make PowerPoints, turn them into narrated videos, etc.

[Also, if you're interested in improving your writing, Ezine Articles has a blog that goes into best practices in writing and ways to improve yours. Always worth a read.]

    Best of Luck to You!
  • You can either set up a website for yourself where you can post your services, or you can test the waters and start at Fiverr or even here at the WF for hire section.
  • You need have wide knowledge for your writing filed then you can write them down. And pay attention to some writing skills. Keep practicing and then you will make the progress.
  • You need two of these two attribute : creativity and research skill. When it comes to research skill, you need to write your research source fast and comprehend it all. Deadline is a part of the writer job, so speed is a requirement for that. Try Spreeder.com to read any article faster, try 250 wpm for first, keep improve it until 400 wpm. Keep the hard work, treat yourself a drink for every successful job. It works for me.

    • The best way to learn how to write is what all teachers would say: Read good writing and before you know it, your vocabulary will improve and your writing will also. You'll be able to see how paragraphs flow, how transition words are used, etc.

The great thing about writing is that most people would rather let someone else sit at a computer and write whatever needs to be written, so if you have decent skills it's one of the easiest services to sell.
  • I also record my live talks and
    teleseminars then get them transcribed.

  • If you want to start a writing service then you need to learn how to market as well as how to write. Both are important.

Decide if you want to write on all topics or if you should specialize in a few.

  • If you have no skills whatsoever it's really difficult, if not impossible to teach yourself to write well, all on your own. Learning to write well is all about a different perspective than your own, and having someone critique your work is absolutely essential. This is where you will learn to write better, and a book can't do that for you.

As a PR and Journalism major, I highly recommend you take some college level courses at the very least. This is where you will learn to write. THEN you can focus on copywriting, sales writing, etc. with the books.

    • Chris, I totally agree with you. And I strongly disagree with those who say that "practice" will make you a better writer. It won't - at least not without proper feedback.

With some learned skills, like playing the piano or hitting a baseball, for example, you get immediate feedback when you don't do it correctly (well, unless you are completely tone deaf when it comes to learning an instrument). You know right away when you missed a note or didn't hit the ball. So, you keep practicing and adjusting until you get it right - although you'll improve much more quickly with a qualified coach or teacher. (Practice doesn't make perfect - perfect practice makes perfect.) So, to merely "practice writing", in order to learn how to write or to become a better writer, is a waste of time. Practicing on your own won't provide you with any definitive feedback that lets you know if you are improving or not.

So, if you want to learn how to write (which is not a skill you can learn overnight, btw) or improve your writing, I'd recommend taking a writing class or course - one that allows you to submit your work for feedback and guidance from someone who is qualified to teach you how to write.

Granted, you can be a terrible writer and find people who will pay you $2 to $4 per article - there are plenty of those types of jobs available on Elance and other freelance sites (and tons of terrible content written by those writers all over the Internet). But if you are serious about selling your services and don't want to make slave wages, and you don't know anything about writing (or don't have a natural talent for it), then you've got your work cut out for you. Otherwise, you'll be competing in a market that is already saturated with very mediocre writers, as well as far too many people who think they can write but really can't, and are willing to write for next to nothing.

Good luck with whatever you decide. Personally, I'd encourage you to look into other ways to make money if you don't already know how to write.
  • If you already have a talent for writing then I would say that article writing is a good move, but don't just drop everything and pin all your hopes on a writing career if you don't have experience.

I started off by signing up to a few micro job sites (Fiverr, Fourerr etc) and also some larger freelance sites such as Elance and Guru.

I've heard that some article writing courses can be helpful for developing skills but I would generally say that the passion and talent for writing needs to be there already!

Article Writing Course - Learn to Write Articles with our Home-Study Course
  • There's a famous story about a tourist who was visiting New York City. He asked a passerby, "How do you get to Carnegie Hall?" The stranger said, "Practice man, practice."

And that's how you get to be a better writer. Practice.

I learned how to write when I was in the US Air Force. It was the perfect setting in which to learn how NOT to do a lot of things. Writing was one of them.

I found that I had to put many of the regulations that governed what I did into my own words just to make sense out of them. And you know what? It worked.

I took a CLEP test, and was exempted from taking 6 semester hours of a writing. Since then, I've written all manner of stuff, including a hardback book (ISBN 9 781840 649819). On the cover, it says I have a co-author, but I'll tell you this (and he will confirm it): I wrote every word myself.

Why did I need a co-author? Because he has already written more than 100 books. I needed the encouragement for one thing, and also someone who could answer my questions. I didn't want to embarrass myself in front of the publisher.

There's so much poor writing on the internet that all you have to do is start reading blog posts. Pick a few of them, and then rewrite them in your own words. Then, bring in some of your own ideas and start putting them on Ezines. They will scrutinize your work and, if it meets their standards, publish it.

Then you'll start to build up a body of work which will add to your reputation.

When Ezines gets an article from you that they really like, then they'll give you Expert status. I got it on the first attempt. Some people never get it.

So, I hope that these suggestions will help you.

I should just mention that getting into the writing business is tough. Unless you can't live with yourself if you're not writing, I recommend that you use this skill as a means to an end, rather than an end in itself.
  • I would reckon the fastest and cheapest way to learn (not necessarily the best route unless you are tight on budget) how to write like the best copywriters in the world is just read their articles and follow how they write it.

Find the articles that have the most views or maybe even read sales copies of highly converting products. You will be able to understand abit of the structure and flow on how they write.

Best way - Pay for a top notch copywriting course. Its well worth the money.
  • Once you start writing, you will learn that there
are many fields to choose from. You can opt to
specialize in one or two niches only. You can take
a creative writing class online or locally, it will
help sharpen your writing skills. But above all, you need to practice,
practice, practice. By the way, writing takes a lot of hard work.
  • i agree with greatwriter, you need to have a specialization when you're a service provider like a writer or designer. i'm guessing greatwriter writes marketing emails because of the line breaks in his post. (my email writer friends cuts her lines like that instead of writing continuously like most of us)

if you want to be an articles, you just have to understand that you may not be paid as much as you expect. but you can raise your rate as you go deeper and deeper into a specialization (like email writing) : )
  • You need to understand the basics of writing, then practice by writing lots of articles and some.

Get on udemy.com and look for a basic writing course. You will learn the basics of what any good writer needs to know/do.

Then start writing short articles, like 50-200 words at a time. You want to know for sure if your writing will resonate with your audience. For this, go to Yahoo Answers website (www.answers.yahoo.com) and pick the category, subcategory and niche that you want to specialize in (its ok if you haven't decided on any niche to specialize in, just answer questions randomly and with time you will realize which topics you are most fluent and comfortable with).

Answer as many questions on Yahoo Answers as you can. Yahoo Answers is perfect for anyone starting out on blogging or article writing. It has major advantages:
    1. You get to practice your article writing/blogging skills in front of a live audience - you develop a writing style in the process

    2. You also practice offering quality content - people asking questions need real and useful answers. You learn how to write useful content that resonates with users.

    3. You get feedback from real users. People asking questions will mark best answer(s) when and if they feel they have gotten useful answers. As you answer more and more questions, you should aim to have as many best answers as possible.

With time you will know if you are ready to start writing articles for sale and more importantly, you will write articles knowing that you have real value that you can offer to your buyers because you have tested and proven your writing skills with a real audience.

    Hope this helps.

    • All the most talented writers are avid readers. My English teacher in high school told us often: if you want to write well, you should first read. Read everything you can lay your hands on. She also told her students to always read with a dictionary by their side and whenever they encounter a word they're not familiar with, look it up and understand its meaning fully.
      • [ 4 ] Thanks
  • Anyone can write.

Very few do it really well.

Since you are just starting out, I would suggest you focus on one specific kind of writing and work hard at it so you can master the necessary skills.

Be aware that many are drawn to writing simply because of the ease to entry. Like I've already said - anyone can write.

If you want to be paid consistently for your writing, you will have to rise above your niche competitors, offer a quality product that stands out from the crowd, and persist over time.

    The very best to you,

    Steve

    • Read a lot with a good memory. I left school at 15 with no qualifications. I always loved reading, though, and I always had a fascination with proper grammar, punctuation and the like.

Whenever I came across something I hadn't seen before, a particular type of punctuation or a grammatical construct for example, I memorized it. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I can then retrieve whatever I've memorized any time I need it later. That's how I taught myself better grammar and punctuation - through avid reading and memorizing anything I didn't know that I felt would be useful to me later.

  • Start by rewriting currently published articles (for practice not publication). Take these articles apart to learn the structure. Work on your editing skills so your writing becomes polished. Then put some time into learning how to properly research. Once you've done this, you should try to write your own original article from scratch. Next build a credible portfolio of sample work. After that, you'll need to locate clients which you can do by posting your article writing services on various sites and forums.
  • You may not make a lot of money
right away, but you should be able
to supplement your income, while you
    establish your credentials, and
    learn the ropes.
