My Ten I.M Commandments

1) Never skimp on web hosting

2) Never skimp on auto-responders

3) Never skimp on domains

4) Never give up

5) Never put all your eggs in one basket

6) Always have more than one way to collect payments online

7) Learn keyword research

8) Learn search engine optimization

9) Get used to the phrase "if it sounds to good to be true, then it probably is"

10) Keep your damn day job till you have saved up enough money for an emergency, and have replaced your full time job income. Don't quit your job then start a thread asking other warriors "How to make $1000 before Wednesday"

Failure to follow these IM commandments may result in you taking out an "I give up" or "my web hosting/autoresponder/registrar screwed me over" thread.

There are more IM commandments but feel free to post them below.

Number 6 is something everybody should really consider. I starting off by selling my products with credit/debit cards being the only payment option - my sales rocketed as soon as I started to allow PayPal.

Number 4 is the most important rule. In business, all kinds of things happen, but it's hard or nearly impossible to stop someone who never gives up.

    11) Read 1-10 and follow before asking why you aren't making any money!

There are business expenses to doing business - and gratefully the ones we spend are far less than those for brick and mortar businesses. When you treat it like a business and not a hobby you are more likely to get business results.

This is the reason why people turn to free services, you have to be able to spend something. When you talk about start up cost's for IM and brick and mortar, it's like comparing apples to watermelons.

If you can't afford to spend $30/month for web hosting and auto responder, then you probably should be looking for job, and not online.

I agree with the Job thing.. but if you can provide a service such as writing.. you can try places like Odesk, Fiverr even here just to get started..

If you can't afford the essentials, then selling your own services is a great way of starting out, however this doesn't mean you shouldn't treat IM like a business.

Having a business mindset isn't about spending money, it's about dedication and organization - having time plans, spreadsheets and regular goals. Setting serious deadlines for yourself is a great way of giving yourself the motivation to keep working hard.

That's true.. Also note that almost with any "Business" you will have to invest. So some sort of "capital" in the beginning will always help.

Edit: Ultimately it goes hand in hand.. gotta have the work ethic and the mindset as well..
