Why is it difficult to find good clients?

I am a writer with over 4 years of experience. I have been freelancing online for over a year now and my profile on Elance (http://soubhikchakrabarti.elance.com) has a near 5 star rating.

Linkedin and Elance have helped me network in a better way but I still come across clients who would want to pay peanuts and expect a mountain in return.

Yes, I have had great clients and have managed to build a great rapport with all those whom I have worked with.

But I just want to ask - are there other ways to network effectively? I do not feel sites like Odesk are conducive to the working of a good writer - clients pay as low as $1 per 500 words!!!

Being a person who loves to write, it does get difficult sometimes to find good clients. In fact, the best clients I have had till date have approached me themselves.

I know Warrior Forum is a great place to network but I am new here and am still finding my way.

Any help on how to network better would be much appreciated!

I know the feeling. I also offer a writing service and sometimes I get a lot of work and sometimes it is incredibly difficult for me to find any work. I think your best bet would be to pay for a thread in the Warriors for Hire section. The first time I posted my add I was getting orders almost every hour. I bumped the same thread yesterday and I only got one new order - the market is very unpredictable.

You should consider setting up a website for your writing service and marketing it as best as you can. Submit guest posts to popular blogs to increase your traffic and exposure, make a Facebook page, Twitter account, offer regular discounts, etc. Eventually the work will start to pour in and you will be set - it takes time.

I would start a blog where you can show off your writing skills, build an audience and offer your services straight from your site.

The fact is that writing is a skill that every business needs. However, with emerging markets and outsourcing to countries, where the cost of living is often times requires half of what the cost of living is in the USA, businesses can find cheap labor.

However, if you are good at what you do, there are businesses who are willing to pay for top-of-the-line writing. You juts have to cast your net into deeper waters where the bigger fish can be found.

You can also supplement your income doing other things, such as Kindle Books or a fun side business: Sno-Cones, selling homemade soaps, BBQ sauces at your local Farmers Market, etc.

This is a great advice i think ....
as mentioned above, the best thing will be to start your own blog and write quality articles. Quality means traffic and you will be getting more work ....

There are other ways to advertise your services. Even fiverr would be better if you are being offered $1 for a 500 word article. You need to have a whole network of profiles to gain writing clients - linkedin, etc. Even try here and built a solid client base.

The thing about it is, do not just write articles, think of what else you can do with writing, and sell those services as well.

You may begin to understand why you find it difficult to find "good clients" when you realize how many mistakes you make when you write.

Slamming your competition isn't probably the best tactic for finding good clients either.

      Hi Tanya,

Thank you for your reply. You are of course entitled to your opinion and free to point out mistakes as I would be free to point out yours, if any. So no grudges there.

This post though, was originally posted in the 'off topic' forum, where I felt keeping it grammar perfect wasn't necessary. I wrote what came naturally, and just like one does not check their Facebook Chats after writing them, I did not check what I wrote too. Being a newbie here, I just wanted to check out how things worked.

For some reason, I see the post has been shifted to another forum. I have of course, edited the mistakes. Appreciate the response and hope you do not find any more mistakes!

I know how you feel. This problem is one of the big downside of freelancing. Unless you are very lucky or very well established, you'll at times be overwhelmed with work and other times struggling to find clients.

Establishing a connection with medium or bigger sized companies, can help getting better pay and more stability.

Also don't just network online. Local businesses can be some of your best clients.

There are times when one of my client keep the payment rate on average, even tough I obviously had already improve my speed and quality. So I said I want quit, and they really dump me. One week later, I got a job invitation from that guy with double salary, I can only grinning at that moment and reject the offer because I have already found a new client who pays better.

        Hi,

Appreciate the insight. I would like to clarify that by Good Clients, I meant those who would pay you a suitable and apt amount for the services that you are about to provide. In many of these freelancing sites like Odesk, clients pay you as low as $1 per 500 words. In fact, there are some ads where clients are willing to forego $100 only if you submit 10 articles of 500 words each day for a month!

I have clients who pay me $6 per 100 words. It is true that you are worth what you are, but you need to find out the right people too.

You cannot expect that everyone will find out about you!

Also, the notion that people always pay you for what you are worth is wrong. Clients are mostly entrepreneurs and businesses and have their own budgets and preferences; among host of other things. So what you get paid, is an outcome of all of these.

If you want to make better money as a writer, you must overcome several obstacles:

    1. You must provide an excellent product;
    2. You must give prospects an opportunity to see your best work;
    3. Your average work must look very similar to your best work;
    4. Your prospect must feel that they are getting good value for the money they are spending;
    5. You must market yourself to the people who are most likely to spend the kind of money you would like to make with your writing services. (You cannot force someone with a low-budget mindset to pay more money. Instead, you need to market your services to people who are willing to pay more money to get an exceptional product.)

      Hi,

      That is a great insight.

The only problem is, to find out the right people who would be willing to shed out the money required. I find Elance better than other Freelancing sites in this regard but even then do not find a lot of clients who want to stretch their budgets to get something that is really worth it.

I don't know your price point, but you'll find that people expect more when you charge less. I've written articles for $1/100 words to (currently) $3/100 words. The former is laden with clients that have extreme keyword needs like 10-15 keywords with 2% density throughout a 500-word article, controlling style issues and they expect you to make the article spinnable.

The major reason for this, from what I have deduced, is that they don't trust you. They also aren't looking for real value. They tend to follow some writing fad that they read about in a book, but they don't know what good content is, how to use their content or really how to ask you to write to your potential.

When your price increases, these issues will stop. At my current rate (and higher ones as well) people have minimal keyword issues, one or two style points and they'll basically give you free rein of how the content is written.

Increase your price and see what happens.

      Hi,

This indeed is a valuable tip. I do charge somewhat similar to you and agree with you that clients who pay less expect a lot more.

Honestly though, I do not discriminate between clients who pay less or who pay more. If I have taken a project, I do justice to it.

The problem though is to find enough number of good clients to keep me busy. I have some clients who have daily, weekly or monthly needs but I have seen that finding good clients generally, is well, tough!

What bugs me a lot though is to get constant invitations to write for clients who are offering peanuts.

    Hi Shoubik,

Keep going my friend, you will win at the end As time pass, you get more work, experince , referrals, and exposure and quality... you will be able to find good clients and get good rates.

Keep increasing your skill and value your provide to your clients, and become their source they can depend on... as your clients grow their businesses, they will depend on you to pay more to get more work.

Also do not forget to advertise like right in this forum Warrior4Hire section i have got good clients from that section, also in your signatures.

Also start a good blog and kept sharing your stuff, writing tips, advice for the clients how to get best of writers, and how to get best of the material they have got written from writers.. LOL i have many articles written from paid authors i paid money to them..and lol not used them ... lack of time? or laziness ? ... So you need to facilitate and educate your clients that how they get more content written, how they can use that content fast, and how many ways there are they can use that content, try to provide addon service , or refer as an affialite like aritlce to audio/video service and earn commission,
and your clients will thank you for those ideas.

Also start your own newsletter, and kept sending weekly updates.. and surprise discount offers on days when you are free and need work for the day.. man just send quick email, say free for next few hours, will write article on 50% off, the first person to send me money through paypal get me busy .. so you get orders on demand... and also fill your downtime with productive work.

Also on your website have lot of testimonials shared by your happy clients...
Keep it up and keep going, you will love it when you start exposing your skill set
to wide audience from your blog, email newsletter, and facebook tips or profile/page/or group.

    May this help,

Just wanted to ask you, since you are in the Warrior Forum for long, is it recommended to use picture perfect English in all replies or do Warrior Members communicate like we all do normally in chats?

Forget about oDesk. You can make a full time income writing on the Warrior Forum. I've done it.

There's a bit of science to it here:

    1. Post a writing services thread

    2. Write some punchy copy and include some images to breathe life into you thread. Make sure to put some of your personality in there. You are, after all, a writer!

    3. Give out 5 review copies.

    4. Copy and paste reviews towards the top of your thread. Now you have social proof going. Check.

    5. Put up paypal buy buttons.

    6. Keep racking up reviews and posting them.

    7. Overdeliver and increase your rates. Keep raising your rates. This improves your quality of customer and allows you to do less work and more interesting work for more money. Win.

    8. Make it clear in your copy that you may at any time raise your rates, limit your clients or shut down your service all together. Which, if your writing is worth its salt, will all be perfectly plausible and forthcoming scenarios.

    9. Develop relationships with your clients. Treat them like gold. Give generously of your time and heart.

    10. Take risks. Offer to set something up for a client. Offer to write an ebook, create an info product, do a WSO together. Always go about it respectfully but you've got to stake something in the game of life...

    11. Keep hustlin' and thinking of ways to increase your rate, decrease your work load and enjoy life more.

It is hard to find great clients if you are looking them at the wrong place.
    Simple as that.

Sites like freelancer and elance attract deal seeking clients. That's what you will get when you hang there. You compete on price. That totally devalues products and services.

I would focus on building a great resourceful site with a nice forum community.
There you'll give suggestions and tips and even newsletters.

It is far more better to attract people rather than to chase clients.

From my experience and I think everybody entrepreneur learns this soon or later is that the real success in business is to provide great value and get paid on a regular basis.
That way you won't start from 0 each month.

    Good luck!
