Taking the next big step........?

I have a tourism website for a couple of years now and only make a few pounds here and there now and again.

The problem is i dont know what steps to take next, i have great content with decent website traffic, I own a facebook page for my website with over 7000 page likes, i feel i have a good base to start a business but i am stuck how to make it work so i can make it a full time job.

The site started off just as a hobby about scottish Tourism, any advice would be most welcome, I have thought about getting a partner with a business brain whilst i carry on with the social media and content side of things.

any tips guys thanks in advance

Greg

First thing you do is put an opt in form somewhere on your home page. Start collecting email addresses and developing a relationship with that list by giving a ton of value. Then you can start pitching them products. Travel guides? Maybe be an affiliate for sites like Orbitz? Travel hacking eBooks? Travel gear? Get creative man.

I truly think you can take a real shortcut by finding a good mentor to point the way for you. Otherwise you might spend a lot of time spinning your wheels and going nowhere. Hope this helps.

    Hi,

You could look for additional monetisation options by dealing directly with local tour operators that do day trips etc and assist them in booking places for a commision?

Some of my biggest income streams come from direct deals with businesses that don't generally offer affiliate/online based stuff.

A bit more work upfront but gives you a huge advantage

I have something in place selling tours by affiliate, just need to get people clicking and buying, i think the Summer season will be a bigger test for this type of thing, i have only had the trips and holidays running since Winter.

I have a good base to start a business, i just need prompting the right way, wheres the best place to find a mentor?

Hey Greg! Sounds like you have the foundations there for something really great!

Like it's already been said, it's now down to collecting opt in's from your followers by means of a free gift (but make sure it's good quality and offers real value) then following up via email marketing with other paid products that complement.

I have two mentors, both in IM but to be honest, what they teach would work in any niche. In fact one of them started out in the motorbike niche before moving over to IM. Both are 7 figure marketers and are amazing to work with. PM me if want to expand on this and I can put you in touch.

        Best Regards,

        Andy

          Greg,

With the greatest respect to posters of replies on this thread, the advice offered thus far is unlikely to project you ahead of the numerous other Scottish tourism info based sites, which includes several very large and authoritative bodies.

I have viewed your site in some depth and whilst it's very informative, well laid out, and bristling with potential, there's absolutely nothing that sets it apart in any way from dozens of other such sites that monopolize keywords and rankings in a Google search.

What you need is an edge over your competitors. A solid reason for them to choose you, something exclusive that they can find on your website and nowhere else, and to make Scotland sound different in a refreshingly novel way that your competition can't.

Ways to do this? There are several, and they all increase traffic dramatically. Firstly there's the obvious . . . YouTube. Secondly there are high profile, huge traffic blogs. And thirdly there is alternative keyword SEO. All are completely useless without the content, and that content has to be totally exclusive, unusual, and highly relevant. That content is available now.

I won't go into it in any depth here as we're talking about Scotland specific, and it's unlikely to be of interest to anyone else, but please feel free to PM me if you're interested to discuss further. You've got a great site there and it's time you started reaping some rewards for your endeavours.

    Hi,

Have you considered using a contest on your website or Facebook? These days, almost all businesses are giving away something on Facebook. Contests can increase the number of people who Like your page on Facebook, and even more importantly, they can provide valuable customer information which will prove to be useful to you in the future.

A Facebook contest may be free (aside from the cost of the prize), but you still have to invest time to make your promotions work for you.

    Hope this works. Good luck!

Hotel booking engines and flight affiliation should be on your aite, like Expedia etc... Car rents should be another part of the product which you are selling. Talk to your operators around the main airportS! Develop a e-tour guide for major cities like edinborough etc... This is where you will get them to opt-in, also offer news as a part of their opt-in (travel news). You could show them the weather but scottland doesn't exactly have attractive weather :p that's just a few ideas I came up with while on the train
