never heard of this before; people getting on dating sites and being scammed by nigerians with fake profiles:

I was a victim of an online dating scam - Feb. 20, 2013

its sad there's so many predators and scammers out there in the world... especially taking advantage of lonely middle-aged women like this. People should not be trusting, not anywhere online, ever. Never send money to anyone, don't believe anything you see without proof, and even then be a total skeptic, and don't be a victim.

when it comes to online dating, I'd never do that since there's so many other types of scams a) person lies about their income/occupation, is really broke and looking for a meal ticket, b) person uses 10 or 20 year younger photo, not current photo, c) hides fact they have 3 kids from different fathers they're not telling you about, d) person just wants to take your money, e) person is alcoholic/drug addict, f) person is freaking insane, lol, g) person is a 'green card girl' just looking to immigrate to the US, h) many other scams. Of course you run into all those in face-to-face, too, so it's a challenge. Glad I'm happily married longtime, don't have to worry about that stuff.

I saw a program on this subject here in the UK a while back and the women involved just somehow get sucked in and were sending these people thousands of £s, and I'm talking tens of thousands. It's surprising just how easily some people get taken in by these sort of things but I suppose it can happen to anybody in the right circumstances.

You would think that scams should be easy to recognize by now. And yet we all get scammed. I once got scammed too and I am a pretty smart guy. No bragging intended. I even have "papers" to prove it

But I really don't think that it has anything to do with your intelligence. People who get scammed are a trusting bunch, a type of people who would not scam anyone and so they think others are like that too. Unfortunately, it turns out the world we live in is much more "diverse" and you really cannot trust everyone. Some people out there really are scammers.

  There is a woman on Dr. Phil now that is being scammed...100%
  She won't admit it still - She wants to believe he is real too bad! Scammers from Nigeria need to be prosecuted, but they are not - and that is why it continues...

  Not even. I think women are stupid, too. :rolleyes: Anyone who would send that much money without even checking out a story deserves to lose it. Wonder if anyone remembers that the safe thing to do is call their (the perps) local cop shop and see what the local cops have to say about them. That's the LEAST that can be done. How about a simple "while you are exquisite via email - I have no clue who you really are so I think we should keep this monetarily platonic for now".

  Cams can also be faked sadly. My business partners have shown me some of the craziest ways some people use to feign being someone else online (not just being female). I'm talking about seriously crazy stuff. It does not do to be lonely on the internet lol

Don't trust anyone, and scam is somehow a game, you don't see your self losing until you see the famous "Game Over". so once you feel you're in a game get the hell out immediately!or you"ll get your ass kicked so hard .

I'm Shocked how people believe people in Nigeria are doing this.. Any "good" hacker would cover them self and Nigeria is a good place to use because you already believe that is where all the hacking is coming from so then you don't look any further!

I'm not saying in all cases, but I know people in America, Europe and other places are most likely doing this just as well and using other countries.

Am a Nigerian, and proud to be firstly i'll liketo apologize about you been scammed but want i want you to know is that most of this scammers are not from Nigeria. so pls. the next time you see someone asking you for money or telling you story about him been at the war front and s in need of cash kindly ignore it

Yep someone tried to scam my mom's friend on a dating site, and she's a lady.

He eventually asked for money for some weird reason and she finally caught on to the fact he wasn't real.

So it happens. There was even a Nigerian guy on this forum who seemed completely legit and then he ended up being a bit dodgy and getting banned. Think he was making friends with people and convincing them to buy him IM products and apparently did it quite a bit.

But really, scammers can come from anywhere. I've seen some pretty bad American, British, etc. scammers as well on the internet.

There are a lot of people out there that want to scam you. It is unfortunate that people are sucked into these schemes. They pay with their heart not with their head. They believe that they have found some one who wants to care for them. Unfortunately they are left worse off than before they started the friendship.

Chatting with someone online without cam is always fishy, and a very clear thought of that she/he is lying to you about his/her identity.

So before pulling your CC or transferring funds to your online friend make sure you know her/him very well.

I do have couple of friends whom i met online and talk to them on phone and had a video chat often, but not on any dating site on fb and they are good.

The problem with dating sites is that people go on there WANTING to be contacted, so they let their guard down. They WANT someone to start forming a relationship so they are instantly vulnerable.

Wow... it's amazing how many internet marketers say you'd have to be stupid to give your money to strangers. Ummm.. I think that's the business you're in. Ok, so you're not scamming middle aged women, but anybody who's written a squeeze page would probably agree that you are trying to leverage the reader's emotion to overcome resistance and get them to spend money.

Now, I'm not defending the scammers. A scam is a scam, simple as that. But some of you talk about the internet like you're my 60 year old mother.

  I watched a TV show that documented the stories of three women and one man who were caught up in dating scams. They seemed like normal people - but they were delusional when it came to this online relationship.
  
  It was hard to convince these people they'd been scammed - they had sent tens of thousands of dollars - and still claimed to "love" the person they "knew"....someone they had never met. I was shocked at how gullibleand needy these people were.
  
  There was a definite story line the scammers followed - quickly declaring their love and their need to be with their new "other" - then having an accident, an arrest, a business problem, a banking problem, a family crisis, a serious health problem needing treatment...the script was the same for every person on the show. Standard soap opera stuff.

Nigeria. Wow, they're really at the forefront of online scams aren't they? I wonder if they're working on a Pope scam right now. They've got about 30 days to trick people in Vatican trips or make them think they're going to be the new Pope.
