Some fresh thinking needed about my business...

Hello to all of you Warriors....
I have been buying and selling used IT/barcode equipment for 20+ years.
I have a website, redesigned twice- it has never brought me one lead.

The equipment I deal in is now a commodity. Most of what I do is to email buyers and sellers- " here is a special buy that we made, get these today " ...or " we are always looking for XYZ equipment, contact us and we will buy your equipment today ."

I am the business, and the business is pretty stale. We have long term suppliers and customers, but we have not expanded with new customers, we don't know where to find them. I have book, ¾ written ( have not quit on it, just not finished ) about what leasing companies can do to make better returns on equipment sold from their portfolio.
Also have 2 ebooks almost ready to publish, finished graphics and formatting being done on these now ( completely different topics -we took 2 books out of copyright and inserted pictures, anecdotes, etc ) and will put them on Amazon, etc to start to sell them.
I LIKE the internet publishing business, also close to being done on an original ebook about gangster movies.

So- with 20+ years of buying, selling and negotiating, taking care of customers, etc,
My business ( ie ME ) need some new direction. There is so much on just the Warrior forum that it is mind boggling.

I am asking for some fresh thinking from you nice helpful folks on the forum. I wont be insulted, and it is hard to brainstorm by yourself.
Any ideas of how to re-ignite my buy sell business or to take advantage of my experience and work at a new venture is very welcome.
I look forward to your comments, and THANK YOU all very much for even reading this far.

  • Curious. What market research have you done online? Whats the demographic? Do you know where possible customers are hanging out? Do you know the sort of problems they are going to run into and will need fixing?
  • Hey you have a great experience and i think you are the one should give advice here . no hard feeling i think you should build a website that is quiet simple yet content rich, before try to sell anything online try to educate people about your niche then promote your product as a must have information to complete what they've learn before . you should also use facebook , google adwords and 7 search in order to promote your business .
    hope that helps
    cheers

  • Sounds to me like you've already embarked on a few new directions (writing/publishing). Why not go ahead and give that route a try? I'm not saying there's easy money in book publishing, but if you've gone this far, go ahead and give it a fair shot. If after 6 months the venture doesn't show promise, then come back and ask for more ideas. Better to not spread yourself too thin. Working on your current business and writing/publishing books at the same time sounds like more than enough to manage at present.
  • Think about your current customers. Use your relationship to find out about their businesses and what other products/services would bring them value.
  • Perhaps publishing your expertise, and effectively positioning yourself online as an expert in your field, will also eventually lead to new customers

    Go for it!
  • thank you all for the ideas and suggestions.
