How to Appropriately Post to Blogs or Forums?

This is a super newbie question, but it's something that I know I have to start doing to help increase my traffic and get links from relative niche sites.

I want to know how I'm supposed to post to blogs/forums that are related to my niche in an appropriate, non-spamming way. I have been searching for some forums/blogs but most of the ones I have found do not allow any links in the post or even in the profile/sig. Am I to assume that these are the ones I'm not interested in and continue searching?

My niche is related to health and weight loss, so I imagine there are many places where I should be able to post, it would just be great if any of you can point me in the right direction and help lesson my learning woes. Any tips or advice would be truly welcome. Thanks!

As simple as it seems, it's actually a skill you must acquire... well at least it was for me lol.

It's actually simple and quite fun when you get the hang of it. For me, I had to realize that I was talking to and helping actual people.

Also, make your posts count. Don't just post random comments to get your post count up. This is your reputation at stake. Provide only valuable information and help out when you can. It's good to stick with subjects that you know, but you can also find valuable information all over the internet. Simply do a quick Google search and relay the information you find. I guess it's like being a middle man heh...

Anyway, to sum it up. Post good information. Simple as that.

    Hope this helps!

Getting back-links from the same niche is pretty simple if you do it the right way. First of all search the similar niche (in your case health and weight loss) forums and blogs. It's not difficult when "Google" is there to help us.
Most of the forums and blogs don't offer back-links directly to new members. (You can understand the obvious reason). Join forums read there rules for new members. If they allow you can submit links. If they don't remain active and contribute to their forums and they will allow backlinks in exchange of your efforts. Don't keep on promoting your product. Try to help others, share your knowledge and make friends, and suggest them your product.

Some blogs allow guest posting. You can guest post about you product there. but try to use good language and provide valuable content. If blogs don't provide guest post, you can ask blog admin to review and post your product.

Keep in mind, don't be aggressive in marketing and don't just focus on marketing. Try to help and share knowledge and people will take interest in you and your product.

    Best luck for the business,

    Regards,
    Ankur

Thanks everyone for your comments.... Yes, I was only planning on posting valuable insight on topics I have experience with, but like Ankur said here, if the blog or forum does NOT allow links, should I focus on that place for posting or keep looking for others? If I'm not allowed to place links to my site anywhere with the post or sig, how would readers check out my info/site even if they wanted to? This is what confuses me...

Forums have their own rules like 10 post to add signature or registered for x numbers of days to add links in the post etc. Read the rules first then you can decide what to do. Most of the forums have rule of 10 post. Don't add 10 post on the same day. register and add 1 valuable post daily. After 10 days you can add signature or link with the post. There are some forums which never allow signature for the profile or only allow to premium members but such forums may have valuable content. But I already said don't just focus on marketing share your knowledge too.

If you intend to post comments in other people's blogs, then it is very important to be polite and respectful of what the blog stands for. This entails posting relevant comments only. This is also relevant to forum posts. Only share your two cents on things that you have knowledge and experience about.

If you intend to provide information to other blogs via guest postings, then you need to use high-quality content that provides meaty information, not some washed out swill that people have heard millions of times about.

if you write a comment that's APPRECIATED enough and leave bait for them to contact you... people will.

This takes experience tracking your comment CTR and learning direct response copy writing.

    Let's keep it simple.

Blogs: Post comments that you'd approve on YOUR own blog.

Forums: Add something to the post. Don't post one-liners just to get your sig seen.

    That's it, really.

Cool thanks.... I will check the forums/blog rules and see if they are the "post 10 then get your sig active" ones, if not I will keep hunting... I read that it's good to be active in about 10 blogs/forums where you post frequently/daily so I guess that will be my goal for this month, to compile my list and start posting valuable content/responses :-)

Just keep at it. The traffic is going to be low for a week or so. But it will start to build steam. I receive plenty of traffic each day from threads that are more than a year old. (And are most likely naturally ranking in Google for their search terms.)

    Hi,

I run a couple of blogs for my clients and I set the policy for links and I approve or disapprove of comments. Here is what I'm looking for...

    1. A comment that shows the commenter read the blog post.
    2. Two sentences minimum... even if they are short sentences.
    3. A link to a site that is relevant to the blog (don't drop a link to a gaming website on my client's leadership blog... for example).

That's it. I don't expect anyone to write a book in a blog comment. I'm looking for something sensible, short and upbeat.
