Rumours Of My Death Have Been Greatly Exaggerated!

Hi, My name is "The List" and several people have
recently predicted my death.

I'm here to tell you that I'm very much alive and
well. And, like many organic objects, I'm simply
evolving.

It has long been said that "The money is in the
list". However, I've always seen that as being a
somewhat short sighted view.

A list can contain thousands of subscribers. But,
unless you can develop a relationship with those
people, there's no money to be made.

Rather than focus your attention on what's in it
for you as a list "owner", I'd ask you to consider
who is on your list, why they subscribed and what
you can do to at least meet their expectations. In
fact, why not go a step further and delight your
subscribers by exceeding their expectations?

The money isn't in the list..

These days the rewards are in the conversations
that you have
with your:
  • Subscribers
  • Followers
  • Colleagues
  • Partners
  • Friends
  • Affiliates
  • Fans
  • Members
  • Customers
These conversations don't just take place within an
email. You need to engage people on your blogs,
Twitter, forums, Social networking sites and all the
other places where your target audience hang out.

The trick is to make sure that you join up all those
conversations with a consistent approach that adds
value to everyone concerned.

So, where have you engaged your audience today?

John
P.S. My apologies to Mark Twain for "borrowing" his
quotation.

P.P.S. My thanks to the idiot whose posts inpired this
thread. ;-)

    Really enjoyed this one!

I agree, lists are NOT dead. It's just that if you don't give them a minimum dosage of TLC they tend to smell that way .

Nurture your lists, though, and the rewards are immense.

And here I thought the rumours were about you John. In which case, I would have countered to those spreading the rumour and stuck up for you, by pointing out that just because a Scotsman takes a few days off from chasing sheep around the pasture does not necessarily mean he is deceased. John just needs more Viagra.

    w00t..

    SO true...

I'm making more money from my lists each and every week (ok, not every week an increase, but you get the point)..

I GIVE to my lists, I speak to them, ask questions, ask for feedback... and it works.. in all the niches I am in...

Each time I ask for feedback from a list, I have to set time down to handle some replies.. usually quite a lot.

    The result?...

I can tailor my next marketing push to what they want, based on their answers. It becomes another win-win situation.

Great post John, if a little misleading with the title

    Peace

Thanks for this John. I am actually just getting my head around email marketing.

Up until now I have been making some decent money from sending traffic to review pages and then onto a merchants page.

The problem with email marketing from someone who is just getting started, is that you don't see results as quickly as with review pages. By results I mean sales. But I realise that they will come if I manage and treat my list properly, so I just need to patient and keep at it.

I am going to try and ask my list (which is starting to grow nicely now) more questions from now on and the tailor my future emails to the problems/issues that may arise.

        Brilliant John....just brilliant....

They say that "knowledge is power" but as with your analogy it's the "what you do with the knowledge that actually gives you power"....

If that's true Steven, I'm afraid you're very unlikely to ever catch up with the old feller. Cave dwelling hermits in the hairy-assed northern extremities of the British Empire tend to live forever.

I have seen many posts about different things being dead including this and agree that they rarely are. Like most things they change and need to be looked at differently to succeed at in today's climate.

I have only been in IM since last summer and have been making money off my list. Wow why didn't someone tell me it was dead. Then I would have just given up on my list. jk

Maybe the people who say that are "bored" with that type of strategy so they say it is dead. Or more than likely they are using that strategy completely wrong, and then have to rationalize to themselves that the reason they are not making any progress with lists is because the list is dead, and not because they do not know what they are doing.

    Who knows.

What I especially liked about John's post is the deeper explanation of how the list is "evolving" and even spreading out into other areas.

In ever facet of business, either online or off, one truth always holds: it is MUCH easier to sell to someone who has already purchased from you and trusts you, then it is to go out and find a brand new customer to sell to.

The point about not thinking of it as "the money is in the list" is key. Even though there is much truth in the statement, it doesn't become true without all of the other things that John talks about.

Thank you for the wonderful reminder!

My point was not about the style or the degree
of aggressivenes in selling, it's about the way that
communicating with our target market has evolved
beyond just having a list of subscribers.

These days we are "followed" in several different
    channels.

In my opinion, it's important to have a strategy in
place to "manage" your conversations with your
subscribers and followers. Often these are the
    same people.
