Tracking Social Marketing Clicks - Is This The Way To Do It??

Just wondering if this is the way to track social marketing clicks....
=> Would you put a URL on the particular site (whether it's Yahoo Answers, Facebook etc) different to your main URL that has specific Google analytics to it??
EG
Your main URL is www.MainURL.com
The one you put on Facebook etc is www.MainURL.com/XXXXX (specific to Facebook)
Am I on the right track????
