Starting my Marketing Firm

After years of freelance things, I am launching my own marketing firm. I have a content writer, a web designer, and I do the SEO (with reliable outsourced help). I honed my business craft with willing close inner circle members.

Now, bringing in business. I've got the ball rolling on my own SEO, I use craigslist and word of mouth. Plan to join the local chamber of commerce for local projects, offer services to local charities......how do I start bringing in real clients. Is there something I SHOULD know about that I don't? Should I invest money in advertising that I am currently not doing? Any insights would be great.....

Sorry to be rude but how can you launch a marketing company when you yourself don't know how to market and asking other people?

For one thing you need to think about the people you want to target for example, it's all very well using sites like Craig's List but think about the people that use them and how much money would spend. Put yourself in the mindset of your target client, where are they and how do you reach them.

When I first saw this thread I wondered how long it would be before someone took that cheap shot!

I'm glad someone brought it up. If you read above, I have a content writer and a web development guy as well as me being the SEO. I was looking for resources that I HAVENT thought of. Even though I have done freelance work in the past, doesn't mean I KNOW everything that is out there. I guess I was looking to find resources that I haven't thought of since now I am finding my own business, not relying on someone else to deliver it to me. I appreciate the constructive criticism though, it is what makes people better at what they do.

    Marketing: To convey value.

To me that means that you need to get out and convey the value of your services to people who would want them. Should you pay for advertising? Not if you are asking that question.
First of all you will need to find these people. Where do they hang out? If you don't know where your ideal customer hangs out. You will be wasting a ton of cash on what I call feeler advertising. I would search the forum for an ideal customers list. The things to look for and how to pick your ideal client.

Jay-Z knew nothing about clothing before he built and sold Roc-A-Wear for $280 million. Chris Sacca didn't know how to write a single line of code, and now is the largest individual shareholder in Twitter. I started as a lead generator in a given vertical 7 years ago, and now I guest write for the leading sites / blogs and get calls each week for folks asking for my "expertise."

I could go on... The list goes on. If you have the drive and most importantly the "I am going to do this" sort of tunnel vision you can teach yourself this stuff.

Identify your core skill. What is it that you are really really good at? Build products around that and exploit that. I love to write, and average about $5 per word - minimum job $1k. I'm writing video scripts, e-mail campaigns, voice broadcast greetings, and direct mail pieces. I'm outsourcing everything else. SEO, design, video production, etc.

Video is exploding. Become a video SEO master. Charge a crapton for that core product / service and run thinner margins on the other products.

Lastly, I've done well to create a "packaged" solutions. In other words, no one can just buy one service from me without buying the other.
