How to protect premium Wordpress plugins

Hi all,

I'm thinking of creating a Wordpress plugin, and I was wondering what are my options regarding how to protect the plugin.

Maybe ask my customers to enter their Paypal email address in a form within the plugin, so they can activate it on a domain.

Are there any ready solutions that do this or something similar?

Thanks in advance...

While there may be a technical solution, you may have a hard time finding a legal one. It's been a long time, but I remember seeing language in the Wordpress license that any plugins developed for use with the core product had to be offered under the same terms.

If my memory is correct (not a sure thing these days ), it means that anyone can buy your premium plugin and do whatever they want with the code. While that may be the legal situation, the practicl one is that most of the people buying plugins are not going anywhere near the source code

As for protection against straight-up thieves, about the best you are going to do is a key system similar to what Akismet and a few others use.

I think the best thing you can do is require a key, and then track that key use by ip so you can see if anybody is distributing it
