How to become a Social Media Manager ?

Hi everyone,

A friend of mine told me she wants to learn how to become a Social media manager and work as a freelancer, from home, for all sorts of firms and businesses...

She doesn't know much about this field (and neither do I, to be honest  ) and wanted to ask :

1/ What is the best way to learn to become a Social Media Manager ?
2/ Is there a particular online course that is recommended ?
3/ How do you go about finding clients ? Any tips or online-reports she can read to get an idea ?

Thanks, Roni

    Hi,

I would probably start by just doing some social media type stuff!

There are a number of sites dedicated to the topic, check out Social Media Examiner: Social media marketing how to, research, case studies, news and more! for example that should keep you busy for a month or two!

Learning to be a SM Manager and BEING a SM Manager are 2 different things.

This can take several years to get to a Manager position. BUT it also depends on how fast you can become good at your craft. I've seen people do it within 1-1/2 - 2 years - but they were DOING the work first, learning and had a passion. They were offered a SM Manager position because people saw their work, loved it and it developed into the ability to become a SM Manager.

Get the knowledge online first and then get the experience. Recommend to your friend that she needs to create accounts at the top social media sites, learn how to use them, take a course in selling, then sell her services to local business, then she can take her services to online marketers. I recommend local first because it's easier to market to them as most small business don't know too much about social media so your friend can really help them with
      social media services.

It depends on the company and what the company does. I hired a SM Manager and they:
      • Developed a strategy for a new brand launch.
      • Created the social media outposts.
      • Created and delivered content on a daily basis.
      • Tied all SM efforts into the overall marketing plan.
      • Oversaw influencer engagement and relationship development via social channels.
      • Engaged in conference tweet streams via hashtags to drive them back to landing pages.
      • Ran all of the targeted SM ads on Linkedin and FB.
      • Ran contests & ads to build fans & followers.
      • All reporting and metrics tied to overall KPI's.
Etc etc, this is just a small sampling of what they did. Its not just tweeting and posting - its a solid position that requires solid experience.

Great question. I teach this very thing.

1/ What is the best way to learn to become a Social Media Manager ?

*** take a course, read books, and most importantly, get on-the-court, real life experience

2/ Is there a particular online course that is recommended ?

My Let's Get Social course (for social media managers) currently being reworked. In the meantime, I have a mini course on my website.

3/ How do you go about finding clients ? Any tips or online-reports she can read to get an idea ?

So many ways. I teach this in LGS, but there are plenty of ways to get clients. There is enough work in this space for anyone with the skills to do a good job for their clients.

She doesn't know much about this field (and neither do I, to be honest ) and wanted to ask :
So what makes her think she's suited to the job? It isn't as simple as sitting around playing games on Facebook, Tweeting what she's up to and posting pictures of her food to instagram.

She'll find people looking to hire on ODesk and ELance. She could also contact companies direct.

It is interesting that you are asking the question for her.

Her first step will be to start interacting with social media herself. Just makes sense.
