Do you prefer tutorial videos with or without music?

I think tutorial videos should be just that. Tutorial! Unless you're teaching people how to play instruments, music in the background would be a distraction.

If there is someone speaking in the video and it is something I am trying to learn then I don't like music. It distracts me from concentrating. But if it is someone who is just telling me about an idea before I'm intensively trying to learn it then I like music in the background. If it is a video showing me how to do something on a computer screen then I really like music because the silence just annoys me.

Here is an example of a video I made that is not a tutorial. It is a recruiting video for my insurance business. You don't need to watch the whole thing. Just listen to the music in the background as the speaker (who I hired to sound like Morgan Freeman

) talks. Then imagine how dull that video would be without the music in the background. I actually spent several hours picking just the right music because some just didn't match the message I was going for.

My first instinct when I open a page with music is to either immediately click it out or if I'm really interested in the content I'm researching for, then I go on a search and destroy mission to figure out where to turn the music off.

Adding some sort of a music clip to your tutorials may help you out or make things worst for people who are viewing it. For a tutorial, I would rather not have any music in the back ground.

I hate music playing in tutorial videos. I do tutorial videos myself and I never use any sort of music or sound effects other than the intro and outro. I've seen some cheap tutorials done on youtube and they slap on some ridiculous techno music which makes me just stop the video altogether.

Music in tutorials can distract the mind from the tutorial itself. Imagine your chemistry teacher in teaching you a crucial topic with a music of Bon Jovi in the background. How will it feel?

I prefer being able to hear exactly what is being said so that I can take it in. The music just distracts the process and sometimes prevents you from actually learning something....

Many tutorials will have intro and exit music that is their brand, and that is ok. But music during the tutorial would be distracting. I am there to listen to what they have to say. If they are making a movie trailer, well that's a different story! :-) Only use it if it is applicable and enhances the tutorial.

Soon as I come across a tutorial video with music, I quickly leave it. 9 times out of 10, it's music I can't stand to hear plus it's distracting.

Intro and/or outro music is fine as it has no bearing on the tutorial itself. But for the length of the tutorial, absolutely not. I want to concentrate on what I'm learning and not be distracted by music (as much as I live, eat and breathe music!). If it's a demo type video then it can be okay, but for a tutorial? Nope, nope, nope!

I created a few products with tutorial videos.

The first product had a very brief music intro on each video. I had customers contacting me telling me they hated the intro and having to listen to 3 seconds of music everytime they wanted to watch a video.

The next product I did had no music in the videos at all. I never once received a complaint.

Take from it what you will.

Personally I prefer video tutorials without audio.

Sometimes the audio can really clash with the video and it then detracts from it.

Either voice annotate over the video or don't bother would be my opinion.

What?!

Tutorial videos without audio -- now there's something I have never heard of before.

I definitely would NOT recommend this. On the very very very SLIM chance someone else felt the same way, you can turn off your speakers or mute the audio. But 99% of people watching tutorial videos are going to want the audio explanation with it -- it's pointless otherwise.

I come from a YouTube background where it has to be fast paced and over-edited so for my purposes, background music is a must, otherwise your content just seems dull and boring...

I get a lot of compliments from my subscribers on my music choices and the way it adds to the videos. I guess it comes down to the niche and your style you are trying to achieve.

This video shows how it can be used well, its a fast paced tips/tutorial video that works great for the YouTube audience.
