Do Domain BackOrders Work?

I have owned this site for 1 year or so and although is making me sustainable adsense money, the main keyword is a tough nut to crack (Breaking into second page for main keyword).

HOWEVER, a domain (the same as mine but a different extension) expires in 1 month and I really want to buy it because its ranked on page 1.

I was wondering if a Domain Backorder could work? I know they say they try their best to get you the domain but, I'm not sure?

Anyone ever ordered a Domain Backorder? Do they refund you the money if they can't obtain it?

suggest you do a whois search and contact present owner directly if identity is not protected ? - always better than going through a middleperson who needs to make a profit on their involvement

I'm not sure about that. He used a private register.

Anyone has an opinion regarding the actual backorder service?

Contacting the owner will might just serve as a renewal reminder but then again it may be the easiest way to obtain it.

My experience isn't recent but namejet and snapnames were the best places for backorders. Godaddy, next to useless.

Use Google to find which is the best drop catcher for the current registrar.

I agree with the reminder point. Also if he sees I'm interested he will ask for a hefty sum. Either way the site is completely abandoned and I just want to get it before my competitors (Multi million dollar companies will most likely go after it)

With that said, can you explain exactly what a backorder does? I have no idea why their service is unique or advantageous when I could do it myself?

What are the benefits a backorder offers me?

Is there something that leads you to believe the domain isn't going to be automatically renewed on its expiration date? I have some that expire next week, and they'll be automatically renewed for another year or two when the day arrives.

Backordering is only good if a domain is ALREADY in expired status - it lets you capture it the moment it's deleted from the registry.

If the name has value, don't expect it to become available for hand reg.

Like I said my experience isn't recent so any advice I give you will be vague.

Go over to namejet and snapnames and read about their services. Godaddy auctions too if it's registered with Godaddy.

Basically though it the name has value it will be caught on dropping and anyone that has placed a backorder on it will enter a private auction where it will go to the highest bidder, eventually.

Hmm.. the domain I want expires in a few days and don't think its worth more than $15 (godaddy backorder cost with coupon). Definitely not $69 but I still want a slight edge over hand reg. I heard its possible to get a refund for failed godaddy backorder if you contact support? (posted on godaddy forums and answered by a mod circa 2012)
