How do I find long-tail keywords to target?

I have a niche blog and I want to do article marketing.

In order to write the articles, I need to find the right keywords to target.

What is the best way to find these keywords that have high traffic but low competition? What software should I use if any?

Any other advice on which areas to target?

Thanks!

Use the Google keyword tool, enter some keywords related to your niche and it will give you keyword ideas

Remember and select "exact" on the left hand side instead of "phrase"

Use the Google Keyword Tool. Select "exact" match and start with your main keyword, then go a few levels deep depending on what interests you.

      For example:
      1) Lose Weight
      2) Lose Weight Fast
      3) Workouts to Lose Weight Fast
      4) Workouts to Lose Weight Fast at Home

You can take it even further and go to Google, type in the search like a normal person and see what comes up in the suggestion box. These suggested "phrases" usually have a little bit of traffic search, otherwise Google would not suggest them.

You should also track where your traffic is coming from to your blog, sometimes you'll see that you are ranking for some long tail keywords that you didn't even optimize for. Now just write/tweak the article for that keyword and you should rank higher

I have heard that the competition level shows in Google keyword tool is for the adwords advertisers. Not for the organic ranking. Is it true? If so, Google keyword tool is not going to work for me right now. I am not looking to use adwords at this moment.

If I want to know the organic ranking competition level of a keyword, which tool can be the best?

You're correct in that competition level shown in Adwords is for PPC.

Market Samurai has a competition module for the first page of SERPs. It's a good snapshot of what you're facing. I think the best way to assess competition is to check out the first page of the SERPs yourself and assess the top 5 sites. Use a browser add on that provides some key data such as PR.

I am also favoring the Google keyword tool for my article and blogging keywords. I have MS which I use for niche selection but the keyword tool is great for keyword and LSI keywords.

I'm also liking the new beta function in this which shows you closely related groups of keywords. You can use these to base a whole post around.

I would always recommend Google Keyword tool.
They are the most accurate in getting the stats straight from Googles mouth litereally!

Market samurai is also good at analyzing them but on the pricey side.
Domain samurai is free and also good at analyzing them

Like most here, I would start with the Google Keyword Tool first. Once you uncover good keyword(s) to target you then want to do some additional research. Start with your main keyword (the most valuable one) and use a tool like SEOmoz's keyword analysis tool. It will pull up the top ten site ranking for that keyword (or phrase). Now, use Open Site Explorer (another SEOmoz tool) and run a link report filtering only dofollow/301 external links pointing to your competitor's home page. Download the CSV file and you now have their entire backlink profile - including anchor text and the url their link is found at. This is great information to have and will save you valuable time.

If you wanted to take it a step further you could take that same CSV file and use Link Detective to generate a graphical representation (pie chart) categorizing their link profile. You'll be able to see the percentage of links coming from articles, web 2.0's, directories, banner ads, etc.

Tip: You can also download this as a CSV.

What can you do with this?
A lot of things. You can do link drive-bys and snatch up the easy links for quick wins. You can uncover what type of strategy they have going on. For example, you may uncover they have a blog network, or that they are sponsoring a number of sites for links. You'll be able to find out who you can approach - and who they haven't - and partner up with other webmasters. It is a bit of work, but it's a job nonetheless. You have to put in the effort to get the results.

On another note, the tools I mentioned are paid tools, but SEOmoz has a 30-day trial and Link Detective has a freemium version. Either way, good research is what is going to allow good implementation.

I use to use Traffic Travis but the one I keep coming
back to is the Google Keyword tool. I make sure to
search on All Locations and organize the results by
global monthly searches and take note of the CPC.
High CPC means it's a quality word or phrase to choose.

If a word has high competition, I choose not to use
it, and go for the Low, or a few Medium competition
    words.

There are million of low competition keywords which can be ranked at Google without backlinks. You need to use tool that from Google to find them. I suggest you to use a blog for it, don't use an autoblog.

Find them using Google adwords tool as that will get you huge suggestions. There can't be any best way other than you hire some writer or write it yourself.

As you know your niche very well and as much dedication you are going to put in, there is no one who would do that..

I can not believe people are still using Long tail keywords. This is so 2008. Long tail keyword is a loose def. so it is hard to really criticize it.

    1. Google is morphing into Latent Semantic Indexing.
    2. Google is driving away from Long Tail
    3. The next penguin update will push multiple LSI usage to determine rank better

Long tail is start but as a former Google'r I would suggest awesome content by synonym creation with Traffic words added. The best way to do this search is
~ keyword search. The highlighted words are what trigger google to rank in part. You can almost count the words in the title url and meta which Google uses to trigger a flag to dig deeper into the site.

The best way I can explain this is to get a adsense account and try to get a high score on it. If you notice how the more words you use in a adsense ad - the higher the score goes. This is similar to how google works in reverse. They look at your landing pages and the ad text then score it.

I would really look into Latent semantic Indexing then build your long tail to match...
