Host losing all your files and acting like nothing happened!?

I wonder if this has happened to any of you guys.

First of all, this host (That I am not going to name here) has been great for the past few years. But for the past few months it has been having lots of issues. I had 3 times that their servers were down for up to 8 hours, causing lots of websites to be down including 6 of mine hosted with them.

Tonight, all of a sudden I started receiving this error for all my sites hosted with them:

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access / on this server.

Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
Apache/1.3.33 Server at yoursite Port 80

I logged in to my Cpanel, file manager and to my surprise all my files are gone. I host 5-6 sites with them all WP based, everything was totally gone. Like I had never hosted anything with them.

So, I contacted their chat support (which by the way, they are always very polite and great). Told him the problem, waited like 10 minutes (this is the part that makes me suspicious), he came back and his answer was " which site you are talking about, all your sites are up and running for me?..." So, I check again and surprisingly everything is back up and running. Needless to say, my files are now back as well.

I asked him what he thinks might have caused the problem, and he says, he looked around and can't see anything that could have caused the problem.

Now, while I was waiting that 10 minutes for him to get back to me, I did some research and found a few other people complaining about the exact same situation.

So, that, and that 10 minutes him being gone as soon as I told him my site info, then being back and all my sites being up and running, makes me wonder if they somehow had lost my files or messed up somehow, and he was just restoring it quickly making it look like everything has been fine and I was just seeing things.

Sorry, this is getting long. I just wanted to see if anyone else has had this problem.

And also, I would appreciate any recommendation on a real reliable host. One that you have been for a while and are satisfied with. This company is one of the big ones, so I am really surprised at all the issues they are having lately. But I just can't risk having my sites being down that often.

By the way, just to be clear, I hadn't done anything that could have caused the files being lost or anything like that. In fact I hadn't even login to my cpanel for a few days.

Thank you all in advance.

Sounds to me like a permissions problem - either the owner/group of the files is getting changed.

If the permissions somehow get changed, depending on what they are chmod to, you may/may not be able to see them in the file manager since your specific user does not have permissions to do so.

If "they don't know", it sounds like some mickey mouse operation to me.

Sounds very mysterious - I've never had a problem like that occur.

I've used NameCheap and FatCow and both have been fairly good to me. I'd say FatCow had better customer service from my experience, being noticeably quicker to respond and a little more helpful with their answers to my inquires.

        Good luck,
        Sam

Not surprised. Every migration we've done from Bluehost has had all sorts of permissions problems. Mainly lax security related issuses that break things when moved onto tighter security.

Edit: also, all of the so called "top 5" are owned by the same parent company and are the top 5 or 10 highest paying affiliates. I would recommend looking into another provider that can assist you a bit better.

Wow! The thought of losing so many sites can be scary. I hope you have backed up everything just in case there may be another problem. They may lose everything, you know? Better be safe than sorry as you look for alternatives.
