Kindle, what is your favorite genre, and why?

Just curious what your favorite genre is for you Kindle writers/publishers. Please explain why you prefer this genre.

Everyone has their own favorite, so there is no correct answer to this question. I am just curious about your reasons and choices.

I hope you will share your thoughts. Not asking you to reveal your secret sauce.

The only answer I can currently give you is there is more than one favorite. The niches have to interest me first. Second, they have to be something that sells; otherwise, it wouldn't be worth the effort. Then the third part, I could let my mother or anyone that knows me read my works without flinching or hiding.

Note that nothing on my list, for other reasons, precludes using different pen names whenever necessary.

The favorite for most authors will be where their knowledge and interests lie, as it should be.

Write what you know, it's a lot easier that way.

I was kind of hoping for something along the lines of, exotica because..., fiction because..., romance because...

I was wondering why people choose the genera they write in.

Ya, I realize that and I can understand why.

I think most true writers, though, just write what interests them.

Most answers would probably be like, "Fiction because it sells more and because I love to write stories," etc.

For example, I like to write travel books because that's a strong interest of mine and I have a travel site. I also want to start writing historical fiction because I was a history major and have a relatively strong interest in history and what "could have been."

Some who want to jump on Kindle because they want to make money will probably choose what they've heard sells. But I think people should just write about what interests them. We all have varying interests so if you do a little research it's easy to find a niche where you have knowledge and where it will probably be easier to make sales.

Are you also looking to see what's the most popular? I can give you the research I did about the top 100 best sellers and generally what niches they are in.

Science fiction and fantasy novels mostly.

The reason why is because the writers have so much to work with. It allows the writer to be as creative as they want. The writers don't have to be exact, they just run with a story and let the creativity flow.

For non fiction: I write ebooks about everything I research. It is the way I organize my ideas. Most of them are out there, some under my name, only one in kindle right now.

For fiction: I like fantasy because I can talk about wohoo stuff and get away with it.

I read a lot of fantasy, but also most of the other genres.

Romance. Research indicating it is the best-selling genre of fiction out there at the moment aside, I write romance because I am in love with the idea of being in love. There is simply no greater feeling in the world to experience, and since I feel so passionately about the topic, writing romance fiction is a logical choice for me.

Mystery - because that is what I mostly read so it's what I know. Thankfully there is a large market for mysteries.

Romance comes a close second - I don't know it as well as they mystery genre but am learning. Why? Because it's a huge genre and I like to convey the emotional feelings that romance readers expect in my writing.

Erotica and romance. It's what I love, it's easy to write and (so far) hasn't required me to promote books like an animal to see some sales. Kind of a set-it-and-forget-it type of thing.

I still haven't really explored other topics, at least not thoroughly. That's my next step.

Crime. I'm a lawyer and used to work for the Crown Prosecution Service early in my career.

I know crime and understand Police and Court procedure.

I guess it's my comfort zone.

Maybe one day I'll step outside!

Crime fiction, now, because it's what I'm trying to write (UK literary agents seem to be saying that this genre has slightly higher chances of acceptance with mainstream publishers at the moment). I download about two books per day, on average, and quite often flick through them too quickly: I probably "read properly" less than a quarter of what I buy. I'm trying to cut down, a bit.

As a neophyte Kindle publisher, I like food and fishing (see my pic for verification)

As an author, I'm digging crime fiction. I'm finding I really enjoy figuring out why people do some of the things they do to each other. Nothing published in this genre yet, more of a hobby/release/change of pace at the moment.

I like the paranormal area. Basically, it is small enough to rank in the top 100 for a book and that will increase your sales like magic. Probably the biggest area is romance. However, that one is very crowded, but I see a lot of writers that say it is a proven winner. My non-fiction sales are very poor. Reading detailed technical manuals is something that not many viewers enjoy.

Romance. Within that, I write the sub genres: Romantic Erotica - Menage, Paranormal Romance, and Romantic Suspense.

      Why?

      This:

Romance fiction generated $1.368 billion in sales in 2011.

From 2007-2011, romance was the second top-performing category (based on consolidated ranking across the NYT, USA Today, and PW best-seller lists).

Romance fiction sales are estimated at $1.336 billion for 2012.

74.8 million people read at least one romance novel in 2008.

Romance fiction was the largest share of the U.S. consumer market in 2011 at 14.3 percent.

It is also what I read, so I consider myself knowledgeable about the genre and sub-genres ;-)

I write about UFC/MMA (guess it'd be sports genre) because I'm a fan and over the last five years I've managed to work my way into that world and do books with fighters and personalities. I did two novels with fighters as the lead characters because I wanted to write try fiction as well.
