Need advice on marketing a new site

Hi Guys,

We have a new client that has a multi vendor online gift shop.
We have a budget of $1000 per month, but we really need to generate around $6000 just to get him to break even.
Some info:
The site is located in Australia and selling to the Australian market.
We put the data feed into Google merchant system.
The site is only 4 months old, and we already got him to page rank 1.
We are right now generating around $3000 per month in sales on average.
We will be using affiliate program (you are welcome to recommend one if you know a good one, we are planing on going with Clixglore).
We are setup with mailchimp for newsletter, but we only have 20 people in our list.

The client is getting stressed right now financially, and I was wondering if any of you can give some advice on what else we can do?

Thanks allot for you help.

Well thats a hard place to be, if he isnt liquid and able to pay the bills that is gonna be trouble. Sorry to not answer your question right away...but something to consider perhaps.

Of course I think the best strategy would be to grow your list but that is a long term strategy. What you need to do is generate some targeted traffic, make sure your social media game is on point, social bookmarking, article marketing, provide some incentive for opting in...ie a free gift certificate for 10% off (just save a pdf and have them download it after opting in) or make them tweet your page before downloading the coupon etc.... you didnt really give much detail besides the finances....whats the average value of a unique visitor, are you targeting landing page(s), multiple pages, a general domain? Price point of products? Main Traffic referalls and sources? Are you doing PPC?

      Hey there,
      Thanks for the answer.
Well sorry I was not very clear, but the $1000 is the adwords he is investing per month.
in the adwords we target multiple pages/products.
an average customer spends around $120.
As this is a gift site we have products from a wide range of prices.
here is our last 30 days analytics stats:
      visit:3,057 pages/V 2.59 time on site 1.2 Min. New visits 78% bounce 68%.
We got the client to put in a promotion for who ever finds their "mascot" in the site(i.e. they find the mascot they get a discount voucher).

      Does this help more?
      Tnx again.

Since you say that $6000 in sales, minus the budget of $1000, will make the client to be at break even, means that the other costs of the product are $5000. It should not be that hard to sell a product when the profit is so low.

With $1000, you can buy traffic. All the other methods, SEO, affiliate marketing, mailing lists are working for long term. You need some results now. The traffic that you buy will be instalty available to purchase what you sell on your site. I had clients with only few hundred dollars for adwords campaigns and they did well. With $1000 you can buy ( depending on your target ), at least 500 visitors a day for a whole month.

From your description above, it seem that the opt-in rate is very low.
There shouldn't be so little subscribers if the site is have decent traffic.
Can you provide a gift/discount/etc to entice viewers to opt-in?

Perhaps you can PM the site, so that I can help to give concrete advice on the opt-in page.

    Hi Khooster,

Thanks for the advice in the PM. I will take your advice and get a subscribe box and put it in a exposed place.
I did an email marketing campaign for a BDSM site for a while, they had a good list or around 6000 people and the results where great.
Can you please tell me what is a critical mass of subscribers you will recommend to start getting the newsletters out, and in what frequency ?
