Creating ebook cover question

Hey again warriors,

Quick question on eBook covers.

I am unsure about the rules and regulations on using an image I find in Google on the cover of an eBook?

Is it above board to just "select" an image from Google images, and use it as part of an eBook cover?

Thank you in advance.

-Steve

Definitely not. The only images you should use are fully licensed images that you purchase or legit royalty free images that allow use as a book cover.

Thanks Paul I thought as much, which is why I went ahead and asked here first. So I would have to either create my own image, or have one created for me...

Or buy a "use" license from a site like depositPhotos.com or one of many, many others.

Or purchase one from a royalty free stock site.

Yes, or you can purchase a royalty free image from somewhere like iStockphoto, Shutterstock, Deposit Photos, etc, and then add text to it for your own cover.

In fact, I made my own cover on one of my bestselling books by using an iStock photo and doing it myself. You definitely want to choose an image that POPS!

You can purchase photos for use on ecovers through sites like istockphoto.com and depositphotos.com to name a few. These photos are royalty free and can be used in ebook covers and a limited number of print runs (I think 499,999) should you decide to use a print on demand service like Createspace.

If you need help, I do design ebook covers and have done so for many years now over at ecoverartist.com

    Kind Regards,

You should consider every photo you find on Google to be licensed or copyrighted, but that does not mean there are not a lot of photos you might be able to use.

Switch over to Google's advanced search, scroll down the the USAGE RIGHTS selection, and select the license level you need. That will limit Google's search to photographs you should be able to use, usually by giving credit to the photo owner.

One of the best resources for free, public domain images is Wikimedia Commons.

    Wikimedia Commons

They've got over 15 million images you can freely use. They're not going to be the same type images you get at depositphotos (my goto place) but if you're on a budget, you can't beat them.
