Been using godaddy but they're driving me nuts. Their interface is really complicated and very very confusing. It seems they've also changed their terms of service without mentioning it on their web site (that I can see anyway ... )

Thank you for contacting Online Support.

As of April 15th we no longer support GoDaddy Hosting Connection applications to be installed on free hosting accounts. You can still install the applications on your own through the instructions provided by the developers of the application you wish to install, but our hosting staff no longer performs these installations on free accounts.

Please let us know if we can help any other way.

I'd recommend you to shift to Name.com or namecheap.com . I'm using name.com ; remember to search for coupon codes and use them while registering .

Guys, seems like he's talking about hosting on GoDaddy, not domain registration.

GoDaddy's fine with registration, but are B- as hosts.
In any case - always host with a different company than the one you register domains with. I use GoDaddy & Namecheap for domains, Hostgator for hosting.
The main reason - if you ever have some problem with the hosting account, you can just point your nameservers to another host and you're good. But if you host with the registrar - your DNS settings will be locked and you wouldn't be able to move anywhere and get your sites up until you get it resolved with them.

Learned this when I gave a DMCA complaint against somebody who tried ripping off one of my sites. HostGator took him down, he just moved to a different host. Had he registered the domain with HostGator too, he wouldn't be able to nudge without resolving this.

He was a bad guy. I'm a good guy. Normally this shouldn't matter if you're honest and no complaints against you, but mistakes can happen so it's better being safe than sorry.

Hi everyone, I went with hostgator as someone on here recommeded them. I set-up the account very easily, flipped the nameserver from godaddy to hostgator and my site is now sitting there.

Incidentally, hostgator's version of fantastico does not contain MODx which is a pity. However, MODx is incredibly easy to install so I had no problems installing it myself.

Can I ask a dumb question?

Why are you using free hosting?

Actually it's a good question and to my knowledge I wasn't!! I PAID for the hosting and then hosted two domains on it, one was going to be a simple holding page for a domain I am hoping to flip - I hosted that one first. The other domain will be the main site using MODx.

It is incredibly difficult to maintain a bunch of domains and some hosting accounts on godaddy. It's totally non-obvious what the hell you're meant to do. I registered 10 domains and wanted to host some of them, I have three hosting accounts and wanted to share some domains across some of the hosting ... my god, what a confusing mess!

Godaddy Did not renew one of my domain names and stole it I called them to have them renew several of them over the phone and one of my best names they simply well the AGENT must have not heard my request when I said renew it thats all godaddy could say but they told me i could buy my name back at a SUPER HIGH PRICE now though if I still want it... yes I agree with an earlier poster Godaddy would be UNDER if it wasn't for newbies signing on every day... I say STAY away from godaddy I also had a bunch of names I was not going to renew never had auto renew turned on for those and godaddy is mysteriously trying to bill me a bunch of random 1000.00+ charges to my credit card with no explanation as to how or why... I say use namecheap if you dont want any headaches namecheap is fast and easy and i like their interface much better I think go daddy complicated their interface to confuse people so people do lose domain names or get ripped off. thats just my person opinion though. I also like how namecheap gives free whois protection (vs godaddy chrages for it) and I think namecheap still is giving away free SSL certificates to. glad to see im not the only person who is fedup with godaddy's acts.

GoDaddy is a nightmare if you use dial-up and always has been. I did my first site in 2003 with GoDaddy--not knowing any better--and it was a pain in you know what.
I still have a couple domains registered there and dread needing to go to the site for anything as it will take hours to get anything done.
I also had a bit of a problem when I 'parked' a domain. All of a sudden it was forwarded to a generic adsense site. GoDaddy couldn't help, so I finally forwarded it back to the parked site. It appeared to me that there was/is some hacking that happens at GoDaddy.
    Check your parked domains.

another 'confusing' aspect of godaddy is that when you buy anything there are a zillion upsells. Upsells are a good idea, but not the tricky way they do them. Grrrrrr ....

My usual advice is NOT to host with your domain registrar. GoDaddy has worked fine for a decade with my domains. I don't try to get much more out of them... As for FREE hosting, the usual outcome is that "FREE" will cost a lot more than good paid hosting at the end of the day due to limitations.

    IMHO,

There are downsides to almost every registrar and web host, but the thing that makes GoDaddy unbearable to me is the abundance of advertisements and "are you sure don't want this too" screens and links.

I'm in the process of switching domain names from GoDaddy to Namecheap as well. I have a few blogs on my GoDaddy hosting account, which I'll probably move eventually. I was less than pleased when I contacted their customer service and I knew more about hosting services than the guy they transferred me to.

Yep GD's customer service is GD-awful!

I recently had a very [;easent first-experience with namecheap. I just want to check their policies on holding domain names, so that i don't get stuck with them if i ever want to leave. If the policies are OK - I'll move most of my domains to them, and good riddance with GD's awful user interface and bad service.

I've finally switched my last domain and hosting away from GoDaddy. It's going to be nice not to have to navgiate their horrible interface anymore
