isn't mailchimp and others free for the first 2000 emails or something?

once you start generating revenue from those free ones, you can use the revenue to upgrade the plan

If you can't afford a professional autoresponder service, I'd strongly advise you to wait until you can, rather than using a free one. For all the reasons explained in this post.

GetResponse and Aweber give you a month free (or for $1) to start you off. After that, GetResponse is $15 per month, I think, and Aweber $19. If you're not making $16/$20 in two months, then you don't have a business, really.

Mailchimp is, but it's highly unsuitable for most internet marketers (as explained in the post linked to just above).

Unfortunately not. It just doesn't work that way at all, and this is the whole problem.

For all the reasons given (at some length and in some detail) in the thread I linked to in my post above. I appreciate the point you're making in general, but autoresponders are a specific exception to it, for reasons you don't understand, and I'm simply suggesting that you'd be well advised to try to understand them rather than repeating the mistakes that countless others here have made and deeply regretted later. But it's up to you, of course.

You're "starting a new business" but will not "invest"?

        I'm confused.

There is usually always a catch, as nobody in business will want to give you something valuable for nothing in return.

You can try this autoresponder if you like. It's free but will advertise to your subscribers when they first sign up.

Are you also using free hosting to collect those emails?

I'm also starting out on this and I'm a cheapskate trying to cut down on costs wherever I can, but a domain, hosting and an autoresponder service is the bare minimum that anyone should invest in. Anything bellow that is not a business, it's a hobby.

Maybe the people you're marketing to will have the same mindset... wouldn't that be ironic.

I've just written a book. I didn't bother to get anyone to proof read it and I fudged a cover together on MS Paint. Want to buy it?

        No?

    Or,

You could use the Newsletter autoresponder plugin for wordpress that connects with Amazon's SES service. It's 10 cents per thousand emails sent via Amazon SES.

I think that is the wave of the future myself.

There are autoresponder plugins available for free around the web but they are not as good as getresponse or may be aweber. I can't say more about aweber as I am not its user but I heard good about it. Btw, these plugins can be good just to start but actually its a waste of time because you cannot track whether your emails are delivering in the inbox or spam box and other more usable email statistics. Like open and click rate.

The financial entry barriers to setting up an online business are almost unbelievably low.

You can even get free hosting (and some of it's even pretty safe and fairly reliable and not a bad risk at all, if you know what you're doing). You can buy a domain-name for only a few $$. An autoresponder is the one thing you shouldn't try to save money over, because the chances of that decision backfiring on you - one way or another and sometimes in unpredictable ways - are so very high.

If you build your systems right, and you install your own tracking systems, not Google Analytics, but set up your own tracking database, you can track your open rates and also get a high delivery rate with Amazon's SES, at a fraction of the cost of Aweber and the other email service providers.

To people that can do that, it might be worthwhile. After all, AWeber is actually doing that for you, in a way. But I think the vast majority of people don't know how to do it.

But as Alexa pointed out just above, this service should be peanuts compared to how much you stand to make. The problem I see is that a lot of people are horrible list builders so therefore have a hard problem monetizing their list, and for them saving $30 a month is actually a lot of money.

I personally know a guy who has a list of about 9000 subscribers and only makes about $300 per month. AWeber charges him $50 per month, so if he can think of a way to reduce this to $20, his business revenue automatically increases by 10%.

The more I think of it, the more I believe the fact that people don't know how to build and monetize a list is the problem why they believe AR companies are expensive. They wouldn't consider them expensive if they'd made a lot of sales, would they?
