Need advice on how best to market a physical product online?

I've never done this before, and I need your help.

I have a friend who has a very cool product he retails for $89. He currently does no online marketing.

What are the best ways I can help him out on this?

Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Buffalobt,

Moneymaker raises a good point. The type of product you have will influence what channels will be most effective for it however in general there are some things you should be looking at.

SEO: If you plan to have the product on a website then you should do some seo for those pages. Generate a list of keywords that you want to target and use those keywords in your SEO campaign. Onsite seo consists of including keywords in copy and website architecture. Offsite consists of things like article distribution (maybe pieces written about the product), press releases, backlink building, etc.

Social Media: If your product lends itself well to building a following on social media, you should do this as well. You can use these channels to make connections with customers and offer incentives that involve the product.

PPC: Pay per click is a great way to sell things online however without knowing what your product is, I’m not sure if this would work. PPC works best for products that have a short sales cycle, do not need a lot of education on the part of the consumer to buy and that can be easily purchased online and that fit into policies of PPC providers (i.e. things like tobacco, gambling and pornography related products usually are banned through mainstream PPC providers in the U.S. anyway).

    Hope those suggestions help,

    Shawn

    Thanks fellas appreciate it!

The product is a low frequency TENS portable massager...used to relieve muscle strain, stress, all that stuff.

I hurt my lower back the other day and had a chance to try it out myself- it worked wonders! I've had the same kind of treatment at the chiropractor and rehab center- great thing is you can do it yourself anytime and anywhere.

The best way would be to make a domain with the product name. Then, add the product page with an honest review and a buy button. If the product is being searched for online it would work. The only problem would be figuring out processing and shipping which can be handled for a price.

      Thanks C.

He already has a website- I'm trying to figure out a way to promote it thru affiliate programs or something like that if applicable in this case.

I am myself is also promoting physical product in Amazon with my own way of doing things. I am not following any gurus or expert, so if you don't mind original idea, here is it:
basically I am using tumblr to drive traffic to my wordpress site with autocross plugins.
        1. make a tumblr account, post a very good image that is related with your physical product and give a detailed tag on it.
        2. make a wordpress blog and write the product review of your physical product.
        3. add the auto cross plugins, so when people visiting your tumblr site they will also tempted to open your product review site.
        4. add the hoplink in your wordpress, profit.
