My email was hacked !

hi guys,

It was so scary man.

I was logging into one of my old old email addresses after i suddenly remember to check it. [i have a few email ad for different businesses link to the same paypal account]

I couldnt log in.
It says my password was changed 4 months ago.
And i didnt change since the day i created it back in 2011.

I went through the whole process of retrieving my email with google.

I got it back.
Changed my password, update my phone number[which i didnt change actually] and put in a recovery email.

But the thing is nothing was changed.
All my mails were still there.

The scary part was that this email is linked to my paypal, webhosting and domain account !
Imagine who ever hacked in could easily have access to all this. !!

But so far there are no extra deduction from hosting or domain or paypal.
I will continue to check all my accounts associated with it.

But im thinking 2 questions.

1. Is it really someone hacked in.?
2. If so, what do they want? since after successfully hacking in, they didnt do anything for 4 months!

Were you really hacked? Who knows. Are they any emails in your sent box that you didn't send? It's always possible that you did change the password and forgot. I know my addled brain doesn't remember what I did 4 months ago.

Why? Email hacking is common. The hackers use your email address to send out their spam/trojan links to your address link. I'd guess they do that once and then move one.

Thanks for the tip. I checked, no sent mails that i didnt send, BUT they could have deleted it and clear the trash too.

I dont change password, thats my lazy habit actually. So although i may not remember what i did 4 months ago, i can trust on my laziness that i wouldnt change! haha

But this is stil freaking me out.

When hackers send emails from your email, those sent email doesnt necessarily have to appear in your sent email folder.

It gets annoying when you don't have your cell phone close by, but worth using it

Hey hi, ya i hate those stuff.
I pratically use the same password for everything becos im just too lazy to keep a record or write it down, and i cant remember all.

That is the thing that freaks me out right now.
Because if he reads my email, he can see what other accounts are related to this.
So he can see all the "welcome" msg with my ID when i 1st join all the different sites and services, all he has to do is try the same pass on all of them and he practically has access to MY WHOLE INTERNET LIFE!!!

Seriously, if you put a hacker right in front of me, i will skin him alive, put salt and rub chilli on his raw flesh!

It is a good idea to have different passwords for all your accounts.

I found a good way to do this was to have them all very similar but either spelled differently or with added characters.

So if someone was to hack your account, it would only be one and slow them down before they could reach another account. And by that time hopefully you would have noticed and changed them all again.

Speaking as someone who's been on the net since 1986, and who's been hacked often enough to get REAL paranoid in his old age, I long ago decided that security was worth the hassle.

For secure email, I use and recommend TORMAIL - it won't work without using the TOR browser and it will maintain your privacy. For generic secondary email, I use my own domains rather than Google or Microsoft offerings, I use only SSL between my home PC and my webmail accounts, and I change the passwords regularly.

Regardless of where you get your email, it's really bad practice to use the same password on more than one site - particularly if you archive sensitive emails containing personal or financial information.

I also recommend and market a VPN service, which costs next to nothing and further protects my privacy.

I do a lot of other things on my home machine to protect privacy as well. I use (and promote) an email client that encrypts my email, so that even if I am hacked, it isn't available to intruders. I also store sensitive documents on an encrpted 1TB Western Digital Passport, and only mount the drive to retrieve documents when I need them. When I don't, they're offline and encrypted.

It's easy to get lazy - we all do that - but once you've been bitten a few times, paranoia starts looking more attractive :-)

A friend has had her email hacked recently. She said they used nonsense type email addresses(name1234@gmail.com for example). It isn't the first time and she's had enough putting lawyers onto the case now, but is it possible to find out who did it using the hacker's email headers?

You should really use something like lastpass or probably 1password which will be able to generate secure passwords for each and every site you visit AND REMEMBER THEM AS WELL! That way you will only have to remember one password to access all of your passwords. The only downside to this is if you would like to log into one of your accounts and do not have access to those apps or sites then you will not be able to. Or course you should keep in mind that your main password must be extremely difficult to guess and must not be a dictionary word for easy hacking!

My gmail account was recently "compromised" you could say. Fortunately for me, gmail has a service where for $1 they will ask you a few questions and investigate your hacked account in a very prompt fashion.

Happy to say I recovered my gmail account within a couple hours and proceeded to lock it up tighter than fort knox lol.

Having your email hacked is a very violating experience as I have many family pictures and personal files stored there.
