As a warrior who makes his living in digital marketing, I have come to see Google as just another evil corporate entity. For a company whose motto is supposedly, "Do no evil", they sure do a lot.

This article is the straw that broke the camels back for me;

Will Google Buy its way out of trouble for a mere $7 million?

This, on top of another recent disclosure, that Google itself was AGAIN using paid back links.

What do other warriors think? And what can we do to punish Google.

I personally am going to;
1. Never use Google again for my personal search engine.
2. Urge others not to use Google.
3. Put links to all my sites for other search engines.

Please like this post so that it gets read by the most people possible, that is if you agree with me.

There's nothing evil about multi-national corporations, it's just how we perceive them and how we manage to use them for our own needs.

Many people are making a fortune online without a Google click in sight, if you're that concerned about Google, don't use them.

I personally use Bing and Google in order to get the most from my internet experience.

If you use the "Google System" in the right way then you can work alongside them in a way that will be very beneficial to your IM businesses and way of life.

I have mixed feelings on Google. They often say one thing and do the complete opposite. I am sure you have seen this to over the years, too. They clearly got the Penguin update messed up, but they have to much of an ego to admit their mistakes.

However, I don't see Bing or Yahoo competing with them in the near future. The only one I could possibly see is Facebook if they were to roll out a search engine. Other companies don't have the funds, but I feel Facebook is smart enough to beat them, but then again they are a completely different animal than Google.

For now its Googles world and we just have to go with them love it or hate it.

        I hate Google.

In my pre-IM days, I set about avoiding Google and Facebook. It really bugs me how much data these two companies have on everyone. What are they going to do with all this information? It scares me.

But since getting into IM, I now see both fb and Google as necessary evils in my life. That is unless someone can come up with some better alternatives.

I've had more run-ins with Google than The White House has with North Korea. As other posters have said, you can either take them or leave them. A behemoth of that size answers to no-one and has the financial clout to do it. Facebook are gradually going the same way and I could name many others.

I've made my feelings known in past posts about Google's deceptive practices, such as personal targeted advertising based on search history - when you've clearly opted out.

The problem is most people NEED Google, being the overwhelmingly most popular search engine. I've learned to live with it but know plenty who've gone elsewhere.

I do believe that one day they'll overstep the mark too much and subsequently lose so many users that it will be the beginning of the end for them. Either that, or there's some awesome alternative brewing in the pipeline on some developers system as we speak.

        Fortunately, nothing lasts forever.

It seems every few weeks or so there is another ....'I hate Google' type thread popup.

We can all bitch and whinge about how we hate Google, but that changes nothing.

Barring some monumental catastrophe, Google isn't going anywhere. So get used to it.

And if you're thinking there might be some 'savior' waiting in the wings to put Google in it's place...then you're also dreaming!

You won't beat them, so learn to live with them. Play by their rules and get on with working on what you can control...your own business.

On the other side of the coin, there are an AWEFUL lot of evil IMers who line their own pockets selling all manner of useless "stuff" to people who want to make money online. I wish we could get rid of them.

You are correct Bob, there will always be some evil out there. That is not what bothers me.

If you notice you will see that when it comes to small time evil marketers, we have no problem pointing it out and always want to take them out. But we have no problem overlooking or even defending the fraud of a big corporations. (threads like this can be the proof)

      That attitude is very disturbing.

    More truth.

But they are, they're going everywhere.

Google is in to more areas of your life than most of you realize. They are into everything, from alternative energy to health care systems.

They recently admitted in court that they manipulated search results in favor of their partners. They pay the fine, and walk away. They don't care what you think of them or if you choose to use them.

Typical example of wolves in sheep's clothing. It's only a problem if they look like sheep to you.

Google is Evil, not just as a corporation.. it tries to become more: a sort of orwellian entity that tries to watch upon us like a big brother. Google gathers information about us through all possible ways, they don't respect our email and browsing privacy and now there's even more to it: with Google Glass they will monitor every single move we make.

Yes, I too encourage people to use Google Products as little as possible. It's a scary corporation and I wish it will soon go bankrupt.

I don't think they are "bitching and whining" but more like venting their frustrations over Google invading their privacy. You can't turn off Google when they are taking photos of you with their "special vans" or satellite.

Personally I could give two shits about Google, they don't pay my bills. I believe in three things... My right to free speech, my right to privacy, and my right to bare arms. As long as any of those violations don't make it to my front door, I could careless, I can only deal with what's in front of me.

I don't see how they have invaded any privacy or any of the others you mentioned. They took a picture of you for their mapping software which helps 100 of millions if not billions, they give you the option to blur your face if you care that much. How can someone have the option if they have no idea if they are on there or not. What about the 5 billion people who have no use or access to GPS?

We don't know what Google does behind closed doors, but I bet it isn't in our best interest.

Google may have to cough up the $22.5 million fine it agreed to pay in order to settle Federal Trade Commission claims that it illegally bypassed user privacy settings in Apple's Safari Web browser.

It's a picture of you... If you walk out on the street then you will be seen... If you go into a tourist destination you have the possibility to be in 100s of other people's photos without your knowledge. Do you get angry at them? No... Them photos will be posted online, just like google do. So why is it annoying when google take an image but not a tourist?

Developing GPS helps everyone in some way or another, if it be postal deliveries, taxis, food deliveries to their local stores so developing that is a good thing!! Only because someone doesn't directly use it or have access to it doesn't mean that it isnt a part of their life.

Heck, I love Google, and Google returns the love. Even, a couple of years ago to receive, a plane ticket and, few nights' hotel in Santa Clara and a tour of the Googleplex. I earn about $50 a month from AdSense, and try to help out the people who receive the dreaded "account disabled" email on the Google help forum (gone through that experience, twice, and thankfully survived.)

Google has its warts; its goodness, stupidity and genius. Out in the real world, the company deals with an absolutely astounding number of people, some of whom are angels and some of whom are truly evil. (I earned my spurs -- and the elevated status with Google -- fending off one nutcase who decided to throw every piece of crap he could at my AdSense account, creating so much havoc that even Google engineers were thwarted.)

Of course, the power can be abused. And of course, the impersonalized and automated systems really are a pain when things go wrong and you can't get a human to help. Like any entrepreneurial success, some individuals and businesses have suffered great losses because of Google, and others have thrived. However, I sense most of the people blaming Google for their problems really need to look closer to home; the rational approach to this organization is to respect it, use it for what it is good, and ensure that your life doesn't depend on it one way or another. Then if things go wrong, you aren't up a creek.

Well, personally...I love Google. Not because I make tons of money using any of their advertising solutions, but because I admire their accomplishments and feel that they have created some great free products that are a fair trade off for what they ask in return.

Does anyone ever even NOTICE the ads in Gmail? I almost never do. Because they are subtle and unobtrusive, like ads should be when placed in a free web-based email client.

Facebook will suck at search every bit as much as Google has sucked at social (Google+). They are just two different things and should stick to what they do best, rather than try taking on everything (perhaps one of my only criticisms for Google).

Google is ran by some truly brilliant people and they seldom seem to settle for anything less than life-changing products that offer value to people on a global scale.

Sure, the recent algorithm updates were less than perfect. It's not like it's particularly easy for a search engine to discern spam sites from non-spam sites. Perhaps easy for humans, but Google seems to be doing their best when you consider just how much of the web they index and how many people are affected by changes to their algorithms.

Sounds like you have been screwed like many others Jack.

Instead of getting angry at them divert your energies into something more constructive because you are flogging a dead horse relying on them for your business, and they sure as hell don't give a monkey's for anyone except their large corporate advertisers.

Personally I use Yahoo and Bing and have done for some time, they return everything I ever search for, Only using G to check out the SEO competition.

Since Panda many of there search pages have gone to downhill, or at least the one's I use, they have knocked some really good sites off the front pages and replaced them with out-of-date articles that are useless, so caring about their user's experience appears to be a lot of twaddle, they seem more interested in getting rid of affiliate sites - good or not.
Mind you affiliates only have themselves to blame for that, now the penalty is being paid for filling the internet up with junk trying to make a fast buck, instead of taking pride in providing high quality information and making a slow one.

Just think of all that time and effort wasted to be back at square one, a very shortsighted policy imo.

Hope you find your way again :-)

I say we all move to BING ( a microsoft company). Clearly a customer friendly group there. no sarcasm at all.

Microsoft was one of the most hated companies around until google overtook them and became more powerful. Now people are urging folks to go back to microsoft...lol

BTW, why do folks hate targeted ads. personally i like the fact that the ads i see are more relevant to me. I am not in the market for tampons so i really don't mind never seeing ads for feminine hygiene products when i surf the internet.

Who cares if they know i like new electronic gadgets or mac computers? so what if they make money by providing me ads relevant to me rather than making me watch every ad targeted at every custom similar to the way tv and radio do.

Do you guys like that sort of adverting better?

And no, i am not a google lover. And i am probably as aware if not more of some scary things google is doing than most around here.

Vote with your feet people, thats the only way groups like google will give a damn what you think. If you complain but still use them and put money in their pockets they just go have a drink on you and laugh.

Wow! What a great thread... and a very interesting article in that link. I really don't think we'll see any "pro" Google comments here. I'm thinking about the new Outlook for emails and I'm going to start using Bing now!

Thanks for all the comments. I think some of you may have missed my main point. I posted that article link for a reason. Google has crossed the line IMO. Its one thing to jury rigg your own product (their search engine). I mean they own it. You don't have to use Google. But it is entirely another matter to actively, illegally spy, and steal peoples personal information, to the point of copying passwords to wifi routers. What do you think would happen if you or I got stopped by a cop while driving down the street scanning each home's wifi info as we drove by (that is, assuming the cop understood what we were doing, LOL).
Business is business. I know we have to use Google. Just like if you have a pc, you have to use Microsoft. But look what happened to MS. They got too big, too dishonest, and now are playing catch up. They got smacked. And I think that is what Google needs. To get smacked. Google needs to be held accountable. Sure, my forgoing the use of their search engine is like shoveling sand on the beach, or as one commenter put it, emptying the ocean a bucket at a time. But if enough of us speak up, soon our voice will be heard. And who else, in terms of a group, can impact the influence of Google the most, us IM'ers. We do this every day.

Agreed, google did get into trouble by doing irresponsible things like stealing people's private information. At the same time google has changed the world and the way the internet and internet businesses work.

A lot of im'ers could choose to not support google at the same time there are tons of im'ers who earn thousands if not millions because of google.

At the end of the day who should one support and why ? That is one choice left to every individual ...

There will always be an evil empire in peoples eyes.
At one time it was Microsoft....now everyone is championing Bing.
If Bing became huge you can bet your bottom dollar they would do what Google does.
Now Apple and Facebook are the evil empires.
In Europe it is Amazon and Starbucks.
I think it's best just to get on with things.

GPS was only one of the example someone on the thread used, Google has clearly broken privacy laws before, and been fined for it. The point of this thread is that people are tired of Google deliberately invading on their privacy. You say these people are "bitching and whining" but all they are doing is venting their frustration by exercising their right to free speech. For you to say these grown ass people are "bitching and whining" is an insult, it's called having an opinion.

You don't have to agree with other people opinions, that is your right, as is theirs not to agree with your love of Google. Google has broken privacy laws before and that is a fact. Google could give two shits about you, me or anybody on this thread, so there is no need to insult people, because Google could give two shits if you like them or not.

Has Google illegally broken privacy laws before? Yes, that is a fact. Is this thread about you liking or disliking Google? false, it is not.

Note: This is from someone who loves using Google products. I don't agree with some of their practices, but I use and love their products.

Call it what you like, half of the replies are just Anti-Google messages, I termed it how I see it. (Being an adult has nothing to do with it... I know plenty of "adults" who whine all the time), if you don't agree with how I termed it (evident that you don't) that is fine. There was no intention to insult others, just saying what I saw.

    Google is not evil.

Their CEO might engage in ritual satantic abuse, like when I saw him last week at one of our meetings. But for the most part they are good people.

They just like to sacrifice children/goats and drink human blood.. on occassion.

Then they sometimes deindex sites too.

But if not them.. who will keep all the restless demons happy?
I'm sure you'd prefer that nobody does it? And the demons have to derive pleasure on their own?

Will Google Buy its way out of trouble for a mere $7 million?

This, on top of another recent disclosure, that Google itself was AGAIN using paid back links.

What do other warriors think? And what can we do to punish Google.

    I personally am going to;
    1. Never use Google again for my personal search engine.
    2. Urge others not to use Google.
    3. Put links to all my sites for other search engines.

Please like this post so that it gets read by the most people possible, that is if you agree with me.
First - it doesn't matter if we like the post or not as far as readership. This isn't facebook. Likes won't make it go any further than it would without any. Thanks are to posters for a good post, and that's their only purpose.

Second - Google = corporation. Of course it is a self serving entity that exists only for the sake of its own proliferation and the wealth of those at the top. Don't expect any true form of charity from it. That would be delusional.

Third - The only way to topple a corporation is to refuse to feed it money. You can use it as a search engine all you want............if nobody feeds it money, it will shrivel and die....or if enough people withhold funds right from the get go, it will collapse very quickly.

Not sure why you think paid back links are bad. Paid back links are actually okay unless they help you in your ranking for certain keywords such as they using certain anchor texts and are do-follow.

I reckon Google are not using paid backlinks to boost their own search engine rankings on their own search engine. Because frankly, that would be rather absurd.

Google is one of the biggest tax evaders in the world as well along with all of their other abuses.

That said - competition will take them out in time. The way people use the internet has been changing for years. Google doesn't seem as 'in tune' with consumers as a number of other companies do.

Yep, they evaded paying $2 billion in 2011 alone. Check this article out.

They pretend their revenues are derived in 'overseas' locations so they can avoid the corporate tax rate of 35%. Of course this is common with almost all multi-nationals but Google has been VERY AGGRESSIVE about paying low to no taxes. Not exactly a 'good corporate citizen' by any stretch of the imagination.

Google is indifferent, unfair, and cruel, like a world leader. It is a very powerful online leader.

I believe it should be obliged to respect certain rules, but we live in a commercial world ruled by greed.

Those who are indifferent to the barbarous way Google does many things should be afraid to disregard the injustice that prevails online.

There are no laws here. The online world is more misgoverned than the offline world.

How many honest people lost their business with the strange Panda and Penguin updates, along with those who really deserved to be punished?

How many people have their Google Adsense or Google Adwords account closed forever without having any chance to have it back, even when they are victims of hackers?

Google doesn't care about investigating anything.

It doesn't need you, and it doesn't care about the fact that you need this search engine and all the possibilities you can have online. If you'll seem to be doing something it doesn't like, Google will simply kill you.

Google closed my Adsense account a few years back but it was only when i tried to cash in the £98 i had made ( i was going to use the money to put towards Christmas presents) they said that there was illegal click activity and that all monies would be returned to advertisers.I did no wrong and wrote to them a number of times but never received a reply?

I checked many posts on various search engines and no advertiser have had any money returned from Google regarding illegal clicks etc, i seems they just keep the money?

Google should follow through on their reason of being...

They are here to provide Warriors with first page rankings on demand as well as free PPC advertising. And whilst they are at it, they should increase their Adwords cut by over 500% so that all the people who spend hundreds on BS seo as well as trying to buck the system with spun crap articles and so on will get rich.

    While we are at it...

They should legalise the use of Fiverr sourced like, and views as well as comments on social media and you tube. In fact, if they were half decent, they would employ a team of translators to correct the half-baked English blog comments that IM'rs outsource to 3rd wold countries.

And if they are really serious, they should publish right here on the WF weekly updates of their algorithms because we are just so entitled to know!

As much as I would love to say f*** google, It's a fact that they get 70% of search traffic.

I tried using Bing and while they do have better results, there's something missing with Bing. I can't put my finger on it though..

Plus they are implementing the rules of how to takeover a country. They do it to perfection.

They talked about it in the Fast Five. here's the video

As long as they provide all the services and free tools, Google will never go under 60% of online search traffic.

Someone at Google has mastered this stuff and has implemented it to perfection.

Now there's a simple choice to make. REally say f*** google and don't use any of their services and tools

    or...

Accept that they are just a money hungry corporation like most are and deal with all the changes they are making to the internet.

Sucks but they know what they're doing. When you pretty much "own the internet" and have billions of people who would be completely lost without you, you can do what you wanna do...

    whether good or bad...

I'm not sure ... their business is built on giving free stuff away. Such as free search service, free email etc. To say that they are money hungry just because they monetize their services well without charging people for it ...

Relying on Google for the bulk of your traffic is naive and I don't like a lot of things that Google do but I still use their services all the time. Their search engine is the only one I ever use, I host and watch videos on YT, add events to Google calendars, use Gmail for emailing, use their analytics on my website, the keyword tool for keyword volumes, Google Alerts to be alerted of new content around the web that might be of interest to me or my sites.

F*ck Google but at the same time they are bloody useful.

Google understands that in order to stay #1 you have to give people exactly what they are looking for based on their search.

So to do this, they are cleaning out all the crap that people put up there...

Do they monetize their services? Hell yes - as we all would do.

Do they minimize their taxes if they can? Yes again... as we all do.
