Ok so I've been studying domaining for a while now and I still don't understand what makes a domain name more valuable than another for instance I was just on Sedo and Saw this:

partners.eu sold for 15,000 EUR

aluria.com sold for 3,000 USD

wpbox.com sold for 1,500 USD

nellcote.com sold for 9,500 USD

Just to name a few.

What makes a domain valuable?

    hahaha.. "studying Domaining"

There is no such thing, domain flipping isn't really working anymore.

Its all about what others will pay for at the time.

The desire for the name by the person buying it and the amount of people who have the desire for the name in a lot of cases, certainly in the case of auctions. Nothing more, nothing less.

People perceive that these domains are valuable and they are willing to pay for them. It doesn't matter what you pay for a domain it is how you use it that matters.

I think it's often the person selling it who makes it valuable, and their own experience and skills at identifying and approaching parties to whom it may have "added value" because of the nature of their own business, situation or circumstances.

The great fallacy, I think, is to imagine that the potential buyers determine the value according to how many of them there are: it's actually the seller who determines that, according to his own skills at having identified in the first place a name for which there'll be plenty of potential buyers, but more specifically and proximally to the sale, his skills at identifying and approaching them. This seems to me to be the point that so many people miss. (It doesn't much matter where and how a domain-name is for sale if the potentially interested parties are unaware of the sale!)

I would suggest that it's the buyer that determines value. More specifically, the number of interested parties and the depth of their pockets.

Domains also have value to different people for different reasons. Some have a value for SEO (page rank, age, backlinks), some for lending themselves to brand creation (short, memorable, catchy) and some are category killers (high volume keywords).

The are as many things that make a domain valuable as there are motivations for buying them. If there was no speculation in flipping domains, we would all have retired years ago.

Nowhere near "for a living", in my case. But I've sold getting on for 200 domains over the last four and a half years.

To get started? Yes - this is a good starting-point: http://domainprofitsacademy.com/subscribe (Gene Pimentel is the person whose advice, on these subjects, you should value, respect and acquire. Might as well "start at the top".)
