I Wonder These Things When it Comes to Free Image Resources...

In the free/paid stock image sites, like stock.xchng - the leading free stock photography site and Morguefile.com,

it says that all the images are free to use even commercially,

but then they mention that "you need to contact and get approved from each artist before using it".

Does these same rules apply on the premium image sites too, like iStockPhoto.com, or any?

If I need to contact every artist (and waiting 3 months for their response) before using their photos, then what's the purpose of these sites?

I could just hire some photographers to take pictures for me.

You need to check with eat site individually.

They are all going to have their own rules.

At a site called freedigitalphotos.net you can download images in different categories for free. You just agree on the terms and enter a captcha code, and then you can download the images.

The full-priced image sites (my favorite is Dreamstime.com) have contracts with their artists such that you are fully protected for commercial or non-commercial use.

As Greedy writes, you should check the TOS for any image site the first time you visit.

What you can never do is resell these images or distribute them yourself.

Personally, I'm not interested in free image sites because I've found that in stock image use "you get what you pay for". On Dreamstime I get a huge selection of high quality work, good tools, and prices I can live with - as an investment in my online businesses. That said, it is disappointing to see their prices going up so often.

As an expert in online Visual Communication, I know the value of starting with the highest quality stock images.
