A question about psychology of marketing

Today's customers are very smart (they have always been like that, but today they are more than ever...) Is there any method, book, or way that shows how to deal with customers , with their inner desires, how to make them wanting a certain product/service? I would appreciate any direction ... We have so much things to do in our daily schedules and we forget one of the most important thing (if not the most important): our customer... We take courses and buy ebooks and scripts, about list building techniques, how to build a website, how to manage sales, blog feeders, article re-writers, how to deal with our busy schedules, time management, self-improvement, ... etc, etc, but hardly deal with customers, their desires, behaviors, issues...

Any idea?

Thanks

Alba

    Two answers.

    1. The psychology is a simple as: Make them think they need what you're offering and do it better than your competition.

    2. Read Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion by Robert Cialdini.

    All the best,

    Tom Peters' Design
    Heath brothers' Made to Stick
    Seth Godin's Purple Cow
    Jack Trout's Differentiate or Die
Robert Cialdini's Influence and Social Psychology

To name a few. If I were you, I'd go to the local library and borrow them all. You'll save about $125 vs going to a bookstore.

If you can rent them in audio CDs that's even better.

Man, I have really found that to be so simple lately after playing with keywords for two years...

Give them exactly what they want for free, and keep giving it to them free via a list.

Throw in a few things for sale that they want while you have their attention.

For me, that does the trick completely.

Robert Cialdini's Influence was a good read, and Joe Sugarman's The Adweek Copywriting Handbook has some good insights in it too.

      Yes! by Cialdini
Triggers by Joe Sugarman -- both are terrific.

David Meerman Scott writers about "buyer personas" which is a really helpful way of looking at things. His new book "World Wive Rave" is a good place to start.

      What is that all about?

I know John Delavera comes up with things that are deep man, but can any one explain what is this all about?

You definitely need to check out Ca$hvertising by Drew Eric Whitman. He condenses Cialdini's philosophy into useful information without all the examples and fluff. Then he shows you simple methods used by advertising agencies to improve conversions and increase sales. That's where I would start.

All the questions you are asking here are answered already inside you. You have the most up to date informations in your brain. Just look around and consider what you really want to buy. What offer moves you the most. That is what will work on the other people as well. Dont try to sell something that even you wont buy.

Easy as that. Stick to this and you will have success you dont need books to tell you what people want because people are unpredictable most of the time.
