Does it matter where the gift is coming from?

Hello!

After more than 1 year away from IM, I am starting afresh.

I have created the necessary squeeze, thank you and download page. This might be a silly query, but 1 year ago I was offering a report as a free gift. This time around I am offering 4x free tutorial videos which I have created.

What would be most effective?
1) to insert a link on the download page to send subscribers to the specific location on my blog where the free gift (videos) are located
2) to create a separate page that subscribers would need to download to access the videos

Thanks for your replies

I don't see why you can't just send them to the page where download items are already at. You can just give them the link to that page in the followup email.

You can also "train" your subscribers to click on your links that lead to your blog. This will be a continuity experience for them and will help to establish a better relationship with them.

Also, rather than make recommendations to products through your email message, you can send them to a presell page on your blog to warm them up a little more before sending them to a product sales page.

Question: What can be done to provide the freebies without making it accessible to people who haven't signed up through your offer? I mean, what's to keep someone from just scraping your site and finding where your offer is located?

I think you can implement referer protection. If you have something like:

        Page A ==> Page B

Page B checks to see whether you came from Page A. If you didn't it can:

        1. Redirect you to another page (like Page A).
        2. Show you a banned message
        3. Fire nukes from orbit

That's what I am worried about. I want the freebies to be available ONLY to people who have subscribed. In that case, where should I put the FREE VIDEOS?

      I agree with Matt here.

Sending them to your blog is a great way to "train" them to KEEP visiting your blog. Your download page is nothing more than a "static" web page, whereas your blog is somewhere that you can interact with them.

Encourage them to leave comments on what they thought about the free downloads, for example: is there anything that they felt was missing from the free product that they would find really helpful etc etc.

This way you not only build a relationship with your subscribers but you also get to find out their wants and needs so that you can in turn fill this need, and you get to "fine tune" your free offer based on their feedback.

      Hope that helps some!

        Hello Andy!

Thanks very much for your detailed answer. What you're saying DOES make a lot of sense and I WILL implement it.

I was just worried that people who HAVE NOT SUBSCRIBED could get to the Freebies simply by accessing my website?

Don't have to worry o much.
          They are free anyway.

You can always have links in the freebies to your salespage.

Look into custom menus on Wordpress... You can leave a page out of the menu and if you wish you can tell the search engines to not crawl it if you are worried about that. It'll still be on your blog, look like your blog but only be found via your squeeze page.

If you use Wordpress you could add the videos to a password protected page. Give people the password in your email.

I would do it where people opt in and are sent to a thank you page telling them to check their email for the download link to make sure people enter legit emails. Otherwise they put in any fake nonsense and still get access to your stuff.

... all this has already been done (Squeeze page and Thank you Page). I am at the stage where they reach the "Download Page" and wonder what is the best way to insert/link the free videos gift.

I would put the links in a pdf so the subscriber can either watch the videos from you site or download them from the pdf. This gives you the opportunity to use the pdf to give the subscriber additional content and over deliver.

For sure, I would offer on the second page of the pdf a free ecourse that people can receive through email by sending them to another squeeze page for the ecourse. This way if you make the ebook available with resell or giveaway rights, other people will be sending new subscribers to your ecourse squeeze page because they will see it on the second page before getting to the video links.

You can also add resources at the end of the pdf to affiliate products that you can make a commission on.

Plus as your business grows and you develop your own products and an affiliate program, it would be easy to change the resources in the pdf if wanted and make it brandable for your affiliates to give away.

You can create a download page that delivers the pdf and on that download page again other offers or programs can be offered.

I hope this has been helpful,

... another squeeze page? They've just signed up on one squeeze page to receive their FREE video course. I think that I might be "overcooking it" slightly.

      To put it simply:
A: People come to my squeeze page and give me their name and email in return for a FREE video course
B: Once they've signed up they get directed to a thank you page
C: Finally, they receive a download page where they can access the FREE gift. That's all.

Currently the FREE gift is located on my blog and a warrior has suggested that I put a password on that page so that ONLY people who have subscribed can access the FREE gift.

      ... any better ideas....

You must not understand viral advertising. When someone joins your list you want them on more than one list. When you build a list, you really build a bunch of sublists. I have over 200 lists.

People also complain about having to go to a squeeze page to get a free product when they are already on your list. What you don't understand, is this gives you a chance to automate another series of content and promotion by getting them on another list. this way you don't have to broadcast every day burning your list with offers.

Plus if you allow other people to give away the pdf, this will be people who are not on your list and when they open the pdf there is the ecourse that will have a good chance of adding people to your list that never would have had the opportunity without the ecourse.

If you want an example of this strategy you can see it in action at...

        Article Writer's Cheat Sheet

The ebook is automatically branded with my affiliates links when the visitor downloads it. The affiliate's links are also in the ecourse that this ebook gives away.

It is a tool that can continually build your list on autopilot.

Not only in this ebook do I have the ecourse but the report people are subscribing to get.

Also included in this ebook are 5 different ways the subscriber can use the ebook to their benefits also. Plus it gives several resources at the end of the report.

This makes your free gift do more than just get one person on your list. It is designed to get many people on your list that you never had contact with.

I hope you understand that building viral elements into the things you give away are esential to reaching people outside your circle of infuence.

I hope this has been helpful,

I understand what Yakim is saying and it is actually pretty insightful. No matter how hard you try to protect your videos, if they are valuable and useful, they are going to eventually leak out somewhere... onto a torrent site, or get shared amongst friends, or whatever. And that's actually ok. Sure, maybe you don't want them leaking, but at the end of the day, the videos are sales tools to sell your product, right? So why wouldn't you want people "stealing" your advertisement and watching it? One advantage of your opt-in model is that it takes the free product and gives it "value". It has a cost now... the cost is that the viewer needs to provide his/her email address.

And the whole point of the free product should be to get emails and get sales. So just because one person signed up legitimately for it, doesn't mean other viewers did as well. You don't *really* want you freebies to be hard to get. You actually want everybody and their grandmother to view them.. because they pitch your product!!! What people are opting into isn't just a useful video... it's a sales pitch (that happens to also be a useful video)! Man, could you imagine if people went online and STOLE Budweiser's new advertisement? And shared it with 10 million people? Do you think Budweiser would be complaining? Heck no! They'd call it a brilliant viral marketing strategy!

So rather than fight it completely, take advantage of the loophole. Brand your videos in such a way that when ANYBODY watches them, they're encouraged to sign up to your list for another freebie. That way, Joe Shmoe who downloaded your content without signing up gets pitched for your product. Eventually you could have a couple of freebies floating out there, all with good content, all hitting different people, some of whom aren't on your list because they got it for free from somewhere else. So in part, you use the videos to sell your paid product. In another part, you use them to continue pushing your list for anybody who hasn't signed up.

Even though you are giving away the content in exchange for the email address, doesn't mean you can stop marketing to them. Afterall, they haven't actually PAID you for anything yet. So you still need to be in advertising mode, even through the course of the freebies.... until you actually get some financial return.

Think about it this way: If your video is a good enough sales tool (as well as informational), would you rather have a list of 200 opt-ins? Or have a million views on the video? Sure, you WANT people to sign up, but if they don't, it should still be greatly to your benefit if they manage to "steal" the videos.

You could even leave some important information out of the video and mention "Check your email. When you signed up for these videos, an email was sent to your address that outlines the 7 steps to XYZ". That way, the "thieves" will be watching your video and think, "Well darn, I guess I actually do have to sign up after all".

It's a pretty good insight, really.

Basically fill your eBook with either affiliate links, links back to your site, or both. As more people get a hold of your eBook, they're more likely to click on your affiliate links or visit your site.

If they go to your site, you have a chance to get them on your list.

I forgot to add something. with the ecourse in the pdf and all the other viral elements, you don't have to be concerned about protecting this free ebook. You want to get it into as many peoples hands whether they signed up to your list to get it or not because built into the pdf is a way to get the people onto your list anyway.

Never protect access to a free list building product if you do things right.

I just use Front Page from Microsoft. I do everything in front page or notepad. It is cleaner code using in page css instead of styles. I use a lot of squeeze pages.

I you go to my blog at...

Crazy Deals Weekly - Internet Marketing Blog

And click on "This Weeks Featured FREEBIE!"

...you will go to a squeeze page. I have about 100 squeeze pages in a rotator giving away something different every time you click on the link. This way if people return to the site for the freebie, they don't know that they can click on it more than once a week, but they will get a different squeeze page every time.

I use all kinds of tactics to build my lists. Some know one else is using.

You could simply ask everyone to subscribe if they want to watch the videos at your blog when they get there.

I do that with my free ebooks. Everyone must become my subscriber to download my free ebooks.

Those who will subscribe at your squeeze page can simply log in to watch the videos when they will arrive at your blog.

You must remember that every extra step or hoop you have a potential subscriber do or jump through will greatly lower your conversion rate.

Also when I made comments here it was directed to everyone who was suggesting ways to protect your free stuff. The goal for creating your videos by what you have said was to give them away.

You must remember that you are only one person. So, your circle of influence is limited. By taking just a couple of easy steps, you will have other people helping to give your freebie away greatly multiplying your circle of infuence reaching many times more people.

By all means get your videos online and available the best way you can now, but work on another freebie like and ecourse, which is a series of emails that will help build a relationship with the new people on your list.

The way your are describing your process is that you send the new subscriber directly to your freebie download, which is a real missed oppornunity to make your first sale. Here is how your process should go...

    1. Visitor subscribes at squeeze page.
    2. squeeze page redirects to a sales letter selling a product related to your freebie. (This could be an affiliate product)
    3. New subscriber finds a confirm email message in inbox.
    4. New subscriber confirms email and goes to the download page.
    5. New subscriber downloads pdf with links to your video, plus the ability to get more information related to your freebie in a small article or report in the pdf.

Above the ad for a free ecourse you explain the rights the new subscriber has with the pdf, which is they can sell it, or give it away.

You must remember that asking them to signup to a new list with the ecourse is not seen as the inconvenience many have described in this post. Your not twisting their arm to sign up for the ecourse.

But it has been proven that it can take as many as 7 touches before someone likes and trusts you enough to make a purchase. That is why you supply a 7-day ecourse. It helps to build your relationship right away with your new subscriber.

Sending the new subscriber to a sales letter when they click the send button on your squeeze page is just one way to let them know that your content is not all free.

You don't want to build a list of just freebie seekers.

What are you plans once people sign up to your list. Do you have a series of emails set to go out at various intervals.

What people should be worrying about instead of how to secure a free product is what you are going to do with the people who do sign up to your list.

These follow up emails should be all planned out and installed in your autoresponder. This is how you begin to automate you sales process with your autoresponder.

Your videos should be a preselling tool to a product with no reason to send people to your blog.

I view a blog as a traffic and preselling tool. I'm not a big believer in using a blog for the actual selling of a product. It should be used to gather traffic and basically send them to different sales letters.

When selling, you only want to concentrate on one product with no other distractions around like are on a blog. So minisites still have a very good use in the sales process.

If you squeeze page is designed to send traffic to your blog then you are going in the wrong direction. Both your squeeze page and your blog should be driving traffic to a sales letter.

I hope this has been helpful,

I actually misspoke a little with this statement. You blog should be sending traffic to your squeeze page and then your squeeze page sends the traffic to the sales letter.

Basically, you want your freebies can only be viewed by your subscriber. so, my advice is simple. you can store your video in amazon s3. an amazing private video streaming storage. First, when your subscriber get your email, include your video link in which you have generate before. the link contain a stream video stored from amazon s3 database, and it can only be viewed by that link.
