Tracking Online Transactions

Hi i want to track conversions (at placement and keyword level) when someone purchases a service on my website. From what i've read, paypal doesn't play nice with Google Analytics and its very hard to setup. Most articles which i have read with possible, are way back from 2010.

Does anyone here have experience setting up GA tracking with paypal?

I'm thinking of using a totally different checkout system which is GA friendly. Not sure what, any recommendations would be great!

Paypal is a good checkout system. I am using Paypal and GA to track my conversions and it is 99,9% accurate.

After a customer buy something from you, he must return to you website to: download the application, complete the subscription, read the article, etc. Add that page in your goal-tracking on google analytics. You don't need to add another code on the page.

In my case, I am using s2member plugin and after the customer pays, he is directed to a page to complete his membership. I have that page set-up as a goal in GA.

you can try using 1shoppingcart as that has its own way of tracking items....you do not need to depend on GA for that either.....

You shouldn't have *major* problems with PayPal and any tracking service as long as you enable auto-return in your PayPal account, and have the return URL set correctly either in the account or in your payment links/cart. This automatically redirects people to your conversion ("thank you") page after paying. If you don't have it turned on, they get a choice of buttons to go to their PayPal Account Overview or to the merchant website. That's where you lose tracking big time since people just close the window there instead of going back to your site to fire the conversion tracking code.

  • When you create your buy now button.

Select Step 3: Customize advanced features (optional)

and enter your "thank you" page URL in the following field

"Take customers to this URL when they finish checkout"

of course GA tracking code must be present in your thank you page.
add the following code at the end of the thank you page URL : " &utm_nooverride=1"

Your thank you page URL should look like that:

    www.your_thank_page.html/?utm_nooverride=1

Finally create a url goal using /your_thank_page and set it to head match.

it should work, since it works for me.
