Hi,

Maybe this is a stupid question, but is running your computer with linux compatible with I.M.? I'm seriously thinking of swapping over but don't want to be at a disavdvantage, just when I'm getting somewhere.

Any insights are appreciated.

    Yves,
Not sure what you mean by compatable? Linux comes in many flavours but manysoftware programs are compatable or you can find a hack to make whatever compatable. Obviously there is software that can only run on windows though.
I'm typing this sat outside on my acer one with linpus (linux).

    Hi Rich,

Thanks for your reply. Shows how much I know lol. Didn't reallise there were variations of linux. So you reckon that there is not really a disadvantage then? I don't suppose you would if you are running linux.

The thing is I am just at the point where I am going to be using Wordpress with the Cpanel for my blog/website. Would any of this be a problem? And what about downloading PDF? I should have been more specific before.

Apologies for my newbieness and lack of geekiness! (bad combination for I.M).

    Thanks

      Yves,
you should in general have no problems. For content creation Open Office works great, Adobe has a pdf reader for Linux, Firefox and other browsers (except IE) work fine under Linux so you can access your control panels etc. In fact almost all open source related products are originally built for Linux and then ported to Windows.

The only time you'll have issues is if you require a Windoz specific application - like IE.

But there is nothing about Linux that will preclude you from a career in IM.

If you can live without windows applications - then go for it! Most of the Internet runs off technology created under Unix/Linux.

Internet explorer works fine in linux. In fact you can run 3 or 4 versions of it at the same time with something like IE4Linux.

It's just hard to tie it to an application that uses internet explorer as a browser like article submitters.

    Hello Yves,

I also use Ubuntu 8.10 for most of everything I do in IM. I have not given up my windows machine as of yet but i am getting very close.

Linux Rocks! Rocks break windows! Any questions?

Linux has a couple of features that allow you to run Windows programs inside the Linux environment. My personal favorites are PC Linux OS and Linspire (Not Freespire)

It works pretty well but I can't figure out how to get programs that need internet explorer or .netframework to work together with something like WINE.

If all you do is web based, I don't see why it shouldn't.

There are exceptions: some specialized SEO, PPC and social media software only works on Windows or Mac.

I use both Windows Vista and Kubuntu concurrently. Both have strengths and weaknesses.

As said browsing and opening/viewing docs works no problem. In fact things are usually a bit quicker as linux doesn't have as much 'clunk' as windows.
