which of these is the best way to judge the size of a market

Hi

I use a well known keyword research tool which bases the size of a market on the number of pages in that market. This tool is not at all a KEI tool - it only uses that variable for the market size.

I was wondering if this is a valid measure. After about the 1000th page, most of the rest of those pages are meaningless anyway, so what is this showing me?

Would it be better to judge the size of a market on the number of searches? Google's external keyword tool shows us searches per month for the keyword.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks
Tony

What do you mean by "pages"? Is the keyword tool reporting pages inside all domains? Page quantity doesn't necessarily means big market. The number of domains plus the price of PPC ads for that market is a better bet.

I think this tool is returning the number of pages returned for a Google search, at least we haven't been told anything different.

I'd be looking on the discussion boards for what's being discussed. I'd go to Amazon and do a keyword search on your topic. However I think that using size as the primary determining factor to enter a market is a mistake. Sure it's a factor but it's only one. There are a lot more important issues to consider.

If I was considering entering the 'teflon coated widgets' niche, I would want to know how big that market is, which means the potential sales value for that market. I was wondering if there are ways to estimate that. Or at least gauge the size of a market.

One way is by number of searches.

Ad spend might provide a rough idea. An estimate could be gained by doing something with the Google Ad Words spend for the set of keywords in the niche.

      Any others?

They have it wrong...The number of pages would be the "supply". The market size would be the "demand", in this case the number of searches for a particular keyword.

However, there's a few things to consider: The TRUE market size would be the total searches for ALL relevant search queries, not just a single keyword or phrase.

Also, when using search queries to determine the market size, this only applies to search engine traffic. The actual market size may be much larger. The search engine market only appies if SEO is the exclusive (or at least main) method of marketing.
