What is the leadgen business?

What is it? Is there such a thing? What do they do? What's the service? What are they doing and who are they selling to? I don't know what it is and how to even ask a question about it.

You are attracting customers looking for a particular service, whether it be by a website you created, a PPC ad, a classified ad, a video, an offline ad, or maybe a combination of several of these things and you in turn are selling these leads to a business either for a per lead cost or a per-arranged flat fee.

    Pretty much it right there.

Suppose I have an online product or solution for franchise owners. I want a list of franchise owners throughout North America. I can buy this lead list somewhere? Where?

What if I want a list of franchise owners that's been presold on buying a 'franchise owner course or solution', is that possible to buy? request to be collected? or do I have to go my way building the lead list myself?

Your google doesn't work? It took me about 35 seconds:
FranchiseE Contact Lists - Only Database of Franchisee Store Locations and HQ Addresses

It would be great if the other 60% of the forum also knew how to do their own research...

I don't see it as hate, some people are just getting tired of answering questions that can easily be answered by using a search engine...

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.

Show me what search engine answers this question...

If you need to sell to printing companies in the country, your first step is, okay buy a list of these printing companies, but the real question is, if you are selling a solutions product for to these companies, if you call the list, it won't be targeted vs something you presell to them.

          Here's an example in practice.

Scenario 1: You buy a list, you start calling the list, you sell your product, most will say no.

Scenario 2: Your list knows you are selling them a solutions that they are interested in. You sell and they respond.

My question is, how do you get the scenario 2 from happening.

I am 'asking' the first scenario as a basis of the second scenario. An assumption that one is going to buy the list first. But can that step by skipped?

          An option would be to

          a) Skip the buying of list, find a specific list (how?, and no, Google doesn't tell you this, try it. Search for "list of printing companies expecting a call from a company selling a technical solution")

          b) If finding a list is a problem, then should one build that list then?

I'm going to put a specific goal here which is this.

I am selling a specific product to food manufacturers. We bought lists of over 25,000 companies. We called them and our respond from per 100 is 2-3.

Then we tested a different tactic. We went to business forums and contacted people commenting on food manufacturing businesses. We asked them a question and offered a solution. Those who replied, we collected a total of 1000+ list. We called them and for every salesperson we asked to call (100 list each telemarketer) one got 70 sales on average.

2% results from a lead list.
70% results from a list we made ourselves.

We are looking for a solution to gather such a list in an industrial scale. Hence the question

Where do you buy such list
and if you can't, how would you go about pre-selling to lists available (besides the inefficient methods we did)
and if you can't, how would you go about building such a high converting list (besides the slow and very limited scale method we did)

So anyway, once you want to get a specific list, can you pre-make it instead of buying one that doesn't really match your spec? Buying a lead list cannot really match what you exactly need.

For example, a list of franchise owner is not pre-sold on the product. How would you presell the product to a list before buying / making it?

It sounds to me you want to know how to sell the company on your offer rather than what is a lead generation business.

Maybe you should check out the strategy of preeminence by Jay Abraham, in which he says, you need to contact a company 13 times before there is a response. Via direct mail, phone, email, and, throw in face to face.

Sorry to say but either you need a little sales training, you have a bum list, or, worst, your in an industry in which you do not understand the protocol and you may be dealing with companies too big for your ambitions.

For instance, a company who has a board of directors means that they need to have a collective conversation and vote on an approval. If that is the case, even if you met with the company they would drag their feet for months before they actual taken you up on your offer.
