When a fiverr provider says he's from USA -- could he be lying?...

Does fiverr make SURE providers are from where they say they are?
Or is it the wild wild west?

I suspect many fiverr providers are lying when they say they are from the US.

  • Wouldn't that be true in any marketplace unless there's some sort of bank verification or something involved? Though even that could be 'faked' if you wanted to.
  • Its often the wild wild east. Most sellers are not from the US and you can
find that out by talking to them or asking questions. Of course, this doesn't mean
that they are worse than people from here.

One hint: If they ever include the word "sir" in their messages you know for
sure that they are NOT from the US

    • thanks for the hint

with the word "sir", may be in asia
  • It's really funny how people from Asia want us to think that they are from the US when using words like "sir" or "bro".
It would be interesting to create a list of these kind of words

Of course. You can usually tell by how well they write.
  • Was that a big concern
    Whether the sellers are from
    US or others?

    I am only concerned if
    they can complete the gigs
    In time and order..

    • I guess that's also a question that could be asked of the seller.

If it's not an important issue they should have no reason to be deceiving.

Deception (however insignificant) might not be the best way to establish any kind of business.

  • It can be a concern if the buyer is looking for someone from USA to write some good quality content for his website in US English.

There are chances of lying but you cannot be sure if the provider is not telling you the truth.
  • Some people are native born from the United States but live overseas now. Some people are originally from elsewhere but live in the United States now. Some people are born in the United States and live in the United States now.

Within these groups you have those who are fluent/native in their writing and speaking and those that are not.

So you have to be careful basing your question on where are you from or where do you live if you are asking for language reasons. If you are asking solely for location reasons it doesn't matter so much.

  • I have come across some people who can barely speak English on Fiverr... It seems doubtful they were from the country they said they were from... But who knows!

I'm guessing people can change it to whatever they wish.. I was happy though.. I got what I wanted and on time!

That site is pretty awesome if you want a cheap alternative!
  • Considering that all I need to appear to be somebody's grandpa in Zimbabwe is a proxy, the answer is, they are from wherever the hell they want to be from!

However, you should base your decision more on user reviews rather than country of origin, unless you want native-english artiles of course.

(possibly off topic) But..... GET REAL.... a TALENTED American writer would be selling to magazines or producing WSO copy for $500 a PAGE. All the writing "talent" you'd gonna find on Fivver is potheads, dropouts, or worse.

    • In fairness, you can't prove who these people are any more than someone can prove or disprove you're someones Grandpa in Zimbabwe.

A lot of people actually use Fiverr as a platform to establish themselves and to acquire contacts.

  • "... for $5 only."

    "...for 5$."

Also, the reason I asked is, this is a concern when buying gigs like youtube views and facebook shares, etc.

You DO want them to be from the country that the site or whatever is in (my case USA).

  • Maybe its just me, but my eyes always dart over to gigs with the american flag first.

Even though I realize they could be from anywhere, and probably are, I can't really help myself.

Don't get me wrong, I don't ignore foreign gigs. In fact, for certain types of work, I actually prefer them. Like fixing wordpress errors, doing css coding, fixing my navigation etc etc. I use to use Americans for this type of work, untill I realized that many of them are too entitled in the way they think. Like thinking that you should pay them 4 gigs to have 1 simple change done. I go on fiver for cheap labor. If I want to pay standard rates I'll use google instead.

I've also got some amazing customer service from foreigners, that I've never gotten from American gigs. And that goes a long way. They will recommend things that actually need to be done to the site. Hard to do things that will HELP you, rather than aimlessly naming simple things they can do to make money for themselves.

However, if I need testimonies done, articles, graphics, voice overs, etc, I always go with Americans. Certain gigs just require a person who understands American culture. And you can usually tell fairly quick whether someones an American or not. If you can't, then they must understand the culture well enough to do the work anyway.
  • I ran into this problem just recently. Working on my logo for my new internet business. Sent the instructions in very easy to read English. The designer totaly ignored all of what I said and did his own thing.

Rejected the first logo design. Drew out the logo by hand, told him how to I wanted the logo to look very clearly. He ended up just copying the hand drawing on photoshop and sending it back to me. Yikes!

I finally ended the transaction and took my business to another vendor.

All in all I think Fiverr is a great source though. Worth the money.
  • I don't care if the seller from usa or else where as long they got good reviews. However,

if he said he is from USA, and I find he was laying, yes I would have a serious issue with this type of sellers. They are trying to change their location for a reason, and whatever it is I don't like it.

You can't trust a person who your first impression about him or her was build on a lie

    • You can usually tell by the copy of the gig if they are U.S. based but not always. It's hard to tell really.

A lot of gigs use other gigs for video testimonials etc to appear like they are from the U.S. too.

But it's all about reviews and results. I play the fiverr game very wisely from a buyer perspective.
  • I ordered FB fanpage like gig , profile flag is US but all likes seem Chinese and Asians
  • Congratulations (?) Your YT video (called "Best Pittsburgh Plumber") got 7,500 views -- overnight -- from Romania!

    • You could probably make a fortune setting up "native English speaking" profiles for non-native English speakers.

Sometimes "native English speaking" is a requirement. Not because non-native English speakers are any less talented, they just never get the grammar right, no matter how hard they try.

I messaged an American with a perfect English profile. The return message gave little doubt he was not what he claimed to be.

If it's important to you, it should be easy enough to find out.
  • Hi Tim:

OK, I got this advice from a friend of mine.

Fiverr provider needs to be on a phone to ask him this question.

Quickly say, "Hey, do you think that the HOUSTON ROCKETS will win the super bowl next year?"

Well, to tell you the truth the Houston Rockets are a basketball team, but most foreigners will answer no. They they will say that the Dallas Cowboys might win.

This trick question is a proven winner.
