How does Prepaid Legal Work?

Hello Folks,
On the advise of some fellow Warriors, I contacted Prepaid Legal. I asked one of the reps that I wanted to start a LLC and he gave me quote of around $40. I am totally surprised at the cost and I would be grateful if someone can explain how Prepaid legal works and why it is beneficial and so economical.

Thanks,
Dan

I like prepaid legal. I don't promote it as a business opportunity but I do use the service, and their identify theft shield.

Prepaid legal entitles you to (I think) unlimited questions from your firm provider. If it's not unlimited, I've certainly never reached the capacity of usage in any given month.

I have used to multiple times to ask basic legal questions ranging from business related questions to the sale of a car I did privately.

As part of the membership I believe they will also review a 10 page legal document for free once per year.

For ACTUAL legal services, you have to pay but you get a discount. I believe the discount is the standard legal rate minus 25%.

If you need an attorney in another state, they will refer you to one who participates in the prepaid legal network and you will get a discount.

So, just remember, if you need ACTUAL work done, there will be a charge. If you just have a question, then it's part of the monthly membership fee you're already paying for.

    Regards,
    Dan

Oh I see. The monthly membership is to ask questions alone but not get any work done, is that right? So if I were to open an LLC with their services, it will cost a lot more?

You pay a set fee each month so you have access to an attorney.

        This includes:
        • Unlimited phone consultation/questions
        • Help with traffic tickets
        • One letter written on your behalf per situation needed - unlimited number of situations. Example: If a construction company uses your outside outlet to use power in order to do repairs on the whole apartment complex, the attorney will send a letter saying, "Pay up or else." (In lawyer talk, of course.) Then if you have another situation (dry cleaner burned your shirt), then they will write one letter for that.
        • Help if you are audited by the IRS.
        • 25% discount on anything you need not covered in sections 1-4.
They also have a business plan.

Since I am only looking for services on opening an LLC and offer consultation regarding my business, would Prepaid Legal still be useful?

You can cancel the membership at any time. Just get it and use it for however long you need it.

I'm not sure PPL although a great organization is what you're looking for. There is Legal Zoom but I don't think that's what you want either.

Where are you opening the LLC matters so for instance if you want a Las Vegas, NV LLC I would consult and use a company that specializes in NV or if you open in Wyoming then find someone there etc.

Personally I wouldn't go on "the cheap" here when it comes to organizing a company. You can bet your ass that with the economy the way it is that sooner or later small biz like this will be in the IRS crosshairs.

Thanks Shay. As I am doing a Google search, I have found a lot of negative reviews for Prepaid legal, is that something to worry about?

I can only tell you about my experiences. I have been a customer, not a rep.

My PPL membership has been worth the price many times over.

There have been many times that just being able to chat with an attorney about a situation (about my ex or the Hubby's ex) has been wonderful.

I have used the attorney for writing letters to a construction company for using my power to provide power for the entire building's repiars, to stop a crazy babysitter from slandering me all over town, and with numerous other issues.

I have always found them to be very courteous, prompt, professional and effective.

Other states might be different - I don't know - but I have been tickled with my membership.

    Hi,

Prepaid legal Services helps people through their Life Events Legal Plan and their Identity Theft Shield plans. They assist in all types of events-both typical and atypical-such as while you buy a house, decide to create a will, or have made an identity theft claim.

Video and more information there + a direct link to where you can buy the plans online for around $20 a month.

The only reason I am sharing this is the prepaid plans work well and I found it to be worth the money. I bought a car in IL from a dealer who tried to pull a fast on me, I bought pre-paid, let them know what was going on, they wrote the dealership a letter for me that threatened them enough to refund the purchase of my vehicle.

A few months later some a-hole cop tried to get me for a stop sign ticket, said I did a "rolling stop" even though my car had been fully stopped (maybe it wasn't 3 seconds but long enough) and this time prepaid helped tell me what to do to fight the ticket and win (yes I did win).

If your in some serious s#$t, then a regular lawyer option is probably the best option, but for $20 you can't even get one on the phone so prepaid wins again.
